I have never owned an apple computer. I am planning to buy a macbook or macbook pro. After checking at apple store, I cannot help wondering why the lcd bezel of macbook is soooooooooo fat, which looks ugly. Other than that, macbook looks cool.

I know there is builtin camera, but that's not an good excuse (sales at apple store gave me that as a reason), since there are thin bezel lapops with builtin camera, such as thinkpad z61t.

Are there other people feeling the same? Maybe we should let apple hear our voice, :D

The real reason I believe the bezel is so big is the bottom half the laptop (where the computer actually is) needs to be that size in order to fit all the components. Of course this means the lid also needs to be the same size. Incidentally because the lid is larger, that means there will be more bezel space.

I think Apple will have a tough time getting the footprint even smaller in order to decrease bezel space. Just think how much thicker the 12" powerbook was because the footprint was so much smaller.

Similar to your situation I thought the bezel was thick at first but after using my Black Macbook for school I haven't noticed this issue at all.

I agree I know people that own them nad I would never even have thought about looking there. And if your wondering, I think that the airport atenna is located in that bezel to recieve signals stronger.

I am using a thinkpad z60t now, the wifi atennas are also built into lcd bezels. The side lcd bezel is so much thinner, although the top is not so thin, which they reduced in z61t.

z61t's bezel size looks similar to mbp, although it's bezel is also made of non-medal stuff as macbook. z61t is of almost the same size as macbook, but a bigger 14" screen. With chasiss size fixed, a fat bezel means sacrifice in screen size. As in macbook, with a thinner bezel, they could have either made it slightly smaller or made the screen slightly bigger.

Now, you got the idea where this is all coming from.
I must admit I am being picky, but apple always says it is the little things that makes the difference, right?

Agree, maybe it is a cost issue, macbook is a consumer version anyway. I hope I will be able to get used to it too.

If a fat bezel is a deciding factor, buy windoze. I'm typing this on my piece of craptop Toshiba (work freebie) and dreaming of a fat apple bezel. In the same vein, I've always thought the new imac bezels were bloated like Oprah on a three day sugar binge, but it didn't stop me getting one.

I am not saying thinkpad looks better, just macbook could be better! Please read my post carefully, I am not choosing thinkpad over macbook due to bezel size. All I am trying to say is that, there are still places in macbook to be improved. Fat bezel is one of them.
Let's put it this way, if there was a macbook with thinner bezel (everything else is the same), which one would you choose, the fat one, or the thin one?

No offense, but you sound so biased as most people would say of apple fans. True, apple stuff looks stylish, but thinkpad is not that bad as you said.

Of course not a deciding factor, Just kinda feel bad about it. I most probably will still get a macbook, after apple rolls out the santa rosa version of it, probably before summer 2007. In the meantime, I am praying that the new macbook will improve on bezel size. If I really can't get over this little issue, I guess I might buy a mbp instead.

i own a mb and i honestly do not believe that the bezel is "fat". You know infact your eye responds well to white space (same true for resumes) so in fact i bet you'd think it'd look uglier with a thinner bezel. You want to see some nice border around the bright screen.

Perhaps I am an apple fan, but I just cannot see why laptop makers don't create stylish and functional laptops like apple does, there is a lot of money to be made in this market.

As people have said, the bezel really isnt that big, perhaps you need to see one in person. as far as features and performance in a compact enclosure, I don't think you can beat the new macbooks, they are the thinnest laptops I know of.

There's just something about thinkpad, i have to confess i'm attracted to them. They look like something you could beat up on sunday night but would still be ready to do a presentation on monday morning. Shame i never owned one before going the mac way.

If i were forced to get a windwos pc, which, thankfully im not!, it'd have to be a thinkpad.

What do you mean? It looks like something that was already beat up on Sunday night. If you want the abused look, put a bag over your mac... And seek professional help.

It means, they're built to take abuse compared to other laptops. You dont buy thinkpads for looks, you buy them for work A LOT of work. If i was using a Thinkpad i probably wouldn't buy a sleeve for it nor would i 'baby' it as i do my macs.

I've seen my friends do unholy things to their thinkpads yet they chug along fine as if nothing happened.

Im not abusive and take care of my gadgets very well....VERY very well. Maybe i should seek professional help for that instead

Someone I know has a thinkpad, he droped in the solid, hard stone bottom of his fireplace. His thinkpad is still working fine though.

my brother-in-law is an electrician. He swears at, and by, his thinkpads. He abuses them to no end and they just work. but lord are they ugly...

Put it another way: Do you want Rosie O'Donnell doing your dishes, or Amy Weber? Both could get them done, but only one is fun to watch.

I'd put a link to Rosie, but I need to eat today.

Then I have to say you haven't seen many thin laptops. I personally have seen one from fuiji, less than 1 inch, actually less than 2 cm! But, it is a 12", which is too small for me. There are other laptops thinner than mb/mbp. I wouldn't say they are better looking than mb/mbp, though

I have gone to apple store a few times to "see one in person", everytime I notice mb bezel more than before, which makes my choice between mb and mbp even harder.

As pointed by others, there might be technical/economic reason apple didn't make mb bezel thinner.

Again, I admire apple for making great products, but that doesn't mean I cannot point out what might be a misstep.

Whatever apple does better than others, one'd say "wow"
Whatever apple does not do so well, one'd say "not a big deal"
This is more like a bigot than a fan, ;)

Then, why is mbp bezel so much thinner? espeically side bezel, macbook's is like as twice wide as that of mbp. because of color difference? interesting.

I definitely understand what you're saying and I agree, but I really don't have an answer. I think the wider bezel makes the MacBook look less modern, but overall it is still a nice looking machine, an improvement over the iBook (except for the bezel...).

And to all the people who say it doesn't matter, well, its the little things that annoy you the most and when you're staring right at it all the time, its hard ignore.

Maybe something to do with the magnets holding the lid shut, perhaps they need the surface area?
