I also noticed the wider bezel at first, because I've owned a couple of PowerBooks in the past. But now that I've seen it a few times, I don't notice it at all.

It's not a big deal, but just one of those things some people notice. Mac notebooks have such nice designs that it's not hard to pick up on little things like that.

As others have said, I think it was a combinations of different elements, including fitting all the parts inside the main body.

I don't consider it aesthetically unpleasing, but you do sorta wish the LCD was bigger. OTOH, LCD sizes are fixed, its not like Apple could've custom-ordered a 13.7 inch screen from some LCD maker...

Well said, never saw any laptop with 13.5" - 13.9" lcd either.

I like the wider bezel... It kind of block out the surroundings when you work! :D So you don't loose focus... :D

I actually think it wound look wierd if it was much thinner - but then again I am kind of biased as I have had my MacBook for a good 8 months now and never once before given the bezel any tought...

It's because traditional laptop bezels use a latch mechanism to close, which takes up less space than the magnets Apple used for the Macbook. The Macbook bezel is just a touch wider than the iBook G4's, which used a latch instead of magnets as a locking mechanism.

I've also thought that the Macbook bezel is quite ugly. I own a 12" iBook (my first Mac ever) and this was one of the things that my eyes kept picking out as being 'non-aesthetically pleasing'. About a year after getting that iBook, I bought a 15" Powerbook and must say that it's the most gorgeous looking laptop I've ever seen or used. I'm totally in love with this puppy. However, I'm really tempted now to upgrade to a 15" Macbook Pro, but one of the things that's putting me off is the non-symetrical bezel, i.e. It's fatter at the top where the iSight's located than it is on the sides. Every time I look at the pics on the Apple Store website, that's the first thing that my eyes are drawn too. I keep comparing this with the ultra-slim bezel on my 15" PB and think "Nope... I'll stick to my Powerbook for now".

In saying that, the performance of the new Intel Macs may just push me over the edge and take the plunge :)

Wow, there is someone even pickier than me! ha-ha
Actually, I noticed the mbp top bezel at first too, and I did wish I could trade isight for more vertical pixels. Then, after I saw macbook, I told myself, OMG, something even fatter, now mbp looks so much prettier to me, hoho

This is plausible, but do you have technical data to support it?
According to what you said, what matters is the total acrea, not
width, right? why does it have to that wide? not long enough?

What is that Apple laptop in the pic I posted on page 1? I transported the pic from the MR Picture Gallery.

One of the last PBs before the G3s. An unforgettable letter/number combination. And there was me thinking what was a guy/gal with such a cool avatar doing with such a clunky machine?!

"Fat bezel" - sounds like a new term of abuse in the playgrounds.

Your worried about a bezel?

Why? lol The MacBook's look so nice.

If a fat bezel is a deciding factor, buy windoze. I'm typing this on my piece of craptop Toshiba (work freebie) and dreaming of a fat apple bezel. In the same vein, I've always thought the new imac bezels were bloated like Oprah on a three day sugar binge, but it didn't stop me getting one.

It is comments like these that give Apple users a bad name. Perhaps instead of dismissing his concerns or suggesting he buy windoze because he doesn't like the current the mac laptops why not assuage his fears with personal anecdotes or perhaps provide a reason why the bezel is thick?

I find users on this board and many other Apple forums boards to be very ignorant towards other laptop options seeing the MB or the MBP as the only "sane" option and often throw out responses that negate legitimate concerns rather than address them.

The MB and the MBP is not perfect and any product from Apple will never be perfect. Stop giving Apple users bad names and properly answer questions posed by other members please!

I have never owned an apple computer. I am planning to buy a macbook or macbook pro. After checking at apple store, I cannot help wondering why the lcd bezel of macbook is soooooooooo fat, which looks ugly. Other than that, macbook looks cool.

I know there is builtin camera, but that's not an good excuse (sales at apple store gave me that as a reason), since there are thin bezel lapops with builtin camera, such as thinkpad z61t.

Are there other people feeling the same? Maybe we should let apple hear our voice, :D

DaLurker- His original post was basically dealing with aesthetics. Others had already posted why the bezel was big. My reply was tongue in cheek. If that gives Mac users a bad name, so be it. Lighten up.
