What I would love instead of system-wide hand writing recognization, is simply a text editing app that you can write on a virtual piece of paper like it was a real piece of notebook paper. It would be lined, and you'd write out the words and they would slowly morph into real text after a few seconds. After you wrote out what you wanted, you would then have a text file or could simply copy and paste the text wherever you want.

Someone would need to invent a stylus that had a really fine tip though for it to work.

To me, that would be one of the ultimate ipad apps.

The problem with handwriting recognition is it's interpreted by the computer. Voice recognition also has this problem.

With a keyboard, even a touchscreen keyboard, when you misspell something, it's because you misspelt it. However, if handwriting recognition gets a word wrong, it's the computer's fault.

Maybe you have good handwriting. But most consumers who use the handwriting recognition would likely have a sour experience and end up mistrusting the iPad because of it.

Is that the kind of experience Apple wants? I doubt it.

Again, Apple already has this technology well developed and integrated into Mac OSX

What's more, as I propose, nobody would HAVE to use it. It would be available if you want to use it. Otherwise, you could continue to use the keyboard. BTW, the Newton had an onscreen keyboard as well.

Some will love the keyboard on the iPad. Some will not.

I just want the option to enter text through handwriting recognition. Apple already has the technology. They could implement it with no fanfare so as not to change their focus or strategy. They could open the tech to other companies to more fully implement via 3rd party app, taking Apple out of it.

I just know that for me, in certain situations, writing on the iPad would be much more natural than typing on it.

If you agree, or even if you don't but think that the option should exist, then join my facebook group.

I tried using a pogo sketch today to navigate around an iphone and palm pre, and it was a pretty horrible experience. You have to really press down to register touch.

I don't know about HWR, but I'd like to see Apple come out with a stylus for the iPad. Using an iPad like a Wacom tablet would be nice for artists.

I love my iPad already.

But, I can already tell that I really wish this thing had handwriting recognition.

It does not have a stylus, so would you 'write' with your finger?

I used to write with my finger (actually a corner of my fingernail) on my PalmPilots. Worked quite well for jotting down a quick note without having to pull out the stylus. Remember that Palm's Graffiti hwr was originally developed for the Newton because Apple's built-in hwr recognition didn't work for many (most) people nearly as reliably.

I hated Palm's graffiti. The later releases of the Newton had very solid HWR, much stronger than Palm's graffiti, using natural writing without the need to learn a new alphabet.
