This thread makes my head hurt.

Radio Shack is no more in with the providers than Best Buy. They're a retail outlet. ****, Radio Shack is no more in with the providers than the company-owned stores!

You do NOT believe anything a sales rep says about things like this. They are stupid. They are ignorant. They will say anything to make you happy or sell you a product.

As others have said, this isn't the FCC's area but the FTC's area. And, as far as we can tell, the FTC is giving a **** about long-term exclusives but not going to actively mandate that all phones must be sold on all networks.

The FCC can't demand they make different phones, CDMA for Verizon for example, all they can do is require it run on any compatible network. Which in the US would be EDGE-only TMobile. Hardly a serious competition.

Those phones would be seriously more expensive.

I think we may see iPhone on one or more other networks (Sprint, Verizon, et al.) with the build-out of the LTE (4G) networks, and probably not before. The current iPhone is unlikely to show up anywhere but on AT&T.

well it's not the Pizza guy now it's the Shack guy!

one of my 1st jobs was RS I know how much my manager knew it wasn't much I had way better product knowledge then he had, most Managers tend to get lazy and caught up in the book stuff. but I don't see RS as being that well informed 1. why would they force Apple to make phone for every carrier when no phone is Forced can I get a Palm Pre on AT&T or a HTC touch pro? so they need to make all phone for all carriers. 2nd as said before FTC only has his authority. seriously doubt they would impose it, maybe that all iphones are unlocked but doubt that!

I also worked for Circuit City before my daughter was born she is now 13. at that time CC said Digital TV was coming out very soon and the converter boxes would be needed. CC was right it just took 13 years!

so look to the Iphone 16G to be unlocked and open to all carriers. :p probably only be 3 carriers by then any way!

The FCC could, theoretically, propagate rules forbidding cell phone companies from establishing exclusive contracts with manufacturers. This would be analogous to net neutrality rules.

This would not have the effect, however, of bringing the iPhone to other networks. It would merely invalidate one clause of Apple's contract with AT&T, and allow other companies to TRY to get Apple to let them carry the iPhone. The FCC cannot require Apple to accept the terms those carriers offer--it is beyond the scope of the Commission's authority.

If, however, Apple continues to maintain exclusivity with AT&T after the FCC invalidates that portion of the contract, we could see the FTC step in to take a look at Apple's anticompetitive behavior.

And there is no way in hell that Radio Shack employees have inside knowledge as to what the FCC is going to do about anything. That's just absurd. That's like saying an employee of your favorite chain of gun stores knows about the next black op authorized by the Pentagon.

Well I have worked at both places, and even though I do not work at either any more, RadioShack is in deeper with Cellular Companies than Best Buy ever thought of being.

Thanks for all your comments.

LOLz. Does anyone know anyone who buys anything at the Shack anymore?

You tell me who the cell companies are "in deeper" with- Radio Shack and their $4.8B in sales or Best Buy and their $45B.

Come on people! It is now the SHACK. They know less than ever after hearing that story. Who shops there anyway unless you need a part for the ole' transistor radio?

It's funny, I was looking for one and they're actually opening a store. The Shack is great for those silly ass cables that such that you need where BB would charge you up the wang for elsewhere. They're like my own local mono price with far less selection.

My husband and I went into radio shack today, and started talking to the rep about iPhones ect. after he asked if we were interested in the MyTouch.

At radio shack, there are monthly meetings just for the Cell Companies that are sold, and the managers find out about any news relating to their stores. According to the Manager, some statement from the FCC came out to Apple/AT&T/ ect. that apple is being required to allow iPhones to come to ANY cellular company, including Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile.

Has any one else heard of such a thing? Most people are saying that the iPhone will NEVER go to Verizon or Sprint, but the FCC has the upper hand, and if they say jump, cellular companies ask, how high.

Just wanting to know what you guys think.

did the Radio Shack rep have a bridge in Brooklyn to see you as well?

Actually, Radio Shack Managers are quite informant. We knew about the Sirus Merger almost a year before it happened. We knew about the AT&T buyout well over a year before it happened. When y

Anyone who listened to the Stern show knew about that more then a year before it happened.

Anyone who reads the paper knew about that a year before it happened as well. A merger like that requires a certain level of approval, which is very hard to keep secret.

I don't see the FCC requiring one phone to be brought to every carrier. If this were the case then certain BB models would have to fall under the same guideline. Just because it's the iPhone doesn't mean it has to be available on all carriers.
