absolutely... everyone should get this game.. I bought it friday and have played it more than any game released in the last few years

Works pretty well on my new macbook, but anything less than the 9400m may be a bit slow with high detail.

Can anyone tell me what the differences are between buying this on a physical DVD or via the Steam store?

1. Do you get a separate install key with the download version as you do with the DVD?

2. Is it the case that irrespective of how you purchase the game, the key is permanently tied to a Steam account once you register it?

3. Say I gift L4D to a friend (who I know has a slow 'Net connection), if I copied/lent them my L4D install DVD could they use that to install the game I've bought for them with their install key (see question 1.), or does it have to be downloaded via Steam?

I'm not that keen on the DRM aspects of this :(

1. No cd key with download version, just appears in the account.

2. Yes, tied with steam account.

3. You can try or look up their FAQ. You are probably not the first one who thought about doing this.

Thanks. Looked in FAQ but couldn't find an answer.
Given your answer to 1. I doubt it will work.

Buying retail and buying steam is the same thing. The only difference is what you're asking, about being able to copy files over from DVD w/ retail rather than waiting on a download. I don't mind either, it's usually where I can get the best price and usually that's retail, but in this case, you can't beat this price. Although other games that are non-VALVe I would prefer via steam b/c some DRM annoys me as well as I like not having the disc in to play.

anywhere here's a way to do what you asked on 3) with Unreal Tourney, so maybe you could do this w/ L4D as well.

Out of curiousity... I've had no issue playing L4D but PeerGuardian doesn't play nice with the Steam mini-app, and then L4D wouldn't launch. Will it work without internet access, it seemed to only launch once the Steam app launched.

I Running this on my MBP with 8600M GT 512Mb, but i found at its recommended settings, it would sometime stutter, and it even rebooted mid game!

I Now have 2xAA and No AF, and its running smoothly, but i also turned of Vertical Sync and Multi Core Use, so i may see if that was the problem, and see if i can turn AA and AF Back Up.

I saw this last night, but it wasn't until I realized that so many of you guys gamed, and played this that I decided to purchase this! What a deal:D

I've heard with the older MBPs it's Multi-core Rendering that's the problem.

The Steam app needs to be running yes, it handles all the multiplayer connections through it. PeerGuardian 2 does block it so you'll have to close it.

Well, it looks like the sale is over. We should all meet up online some time and play a few of the campaigns.

P-Worm

Might be difficult given we're all over the world, from another community that I play a campaign or 2 a night with, the Americans (we're mostly Brits) have terrible lag when we host and vice versa when they host. Thats my only complaint about this game.

Ah... If only Apple had paid that 1 million dollars for Valve to port their games to Mac... This game is so awesome. I hardly ever promote a game like a religion but man. Now I have to use Boot Camp all the time.

I actually bought a copy of Vista to play TF2 (which admittedly runs ok on Crossover) in better quality and to run L4D :D

The only reason I run XP now is because of the Steam service :)

I definitely wouldn't repurchase my library if they brought the service to OSX though. I think that ship sailed a long time ago, I've got 50 games on Steam and I play most.

Yeah, although I can't imagine they'd make us rebuy them (or I'd hope not). I have a lot of games on Steam and like you, there's no way I'd pay again for them, not matter how much I play them.

Yeah i got this for xmas :D
Runs insanely on my sig macbook pro!
16xAA, 16xAF, everything at full
hehehehe:D:apple:

Eh, I don't know if it runs 'insanely' on a 9600M GT.

This might be Source Engine but 16xAA? I'm willing to be framerates well under 30.

Yeah it is, i have kept that off, im now on

1440x900
8xCSAA
4xAF
Double Buffer Sync
Rest at Max.

Game looks sweet, but i sometimes turn it down when online so i dont lag.

I'm totally down to getting together on L4D to play a few matches. We should make if not already a MacRumors group on steam =) It'd be an easy way to keep track who's on to play..

anyway max settings on MPB? insane!! I wish I could run this via crossover, I hate rebooting, even though my steam games run just soo much better in windows. I'm willing to take the hit on video settings for Crossover, but no go w/ L4D.

Within 5 hours of playing L4D, on vs mode I killed all 4 human players with a tank!

Knocked 2 out with a tree as they came out, then punched one out, then chased the last guy and punched him out too.

=)
