I think what he’s saying is that once you open the preview, you can go to the “share” icon in the top right, select that, and then open in whatever program you want. Then, you should be able to save it back to any place you want. It’s not as streamline as most users would want, but it does actually work.

Correct. I was also saying that actually opening the Word app let's say, and using their cloud connections to Dropbox/Onedrive (no it wont help for icloud users) in the Word app "Open" tab is a lot easier and less steps. Just find your file and it opens right in the Word app you are already in. Then it saves right back to the cloud automatically (or autosave) in Word without any extra steps.

Going through Files to edit a Word doc in Dropbox/Onedrive (absent it being in icloud which Word app will not connect to as a service) is a much slower solution.

Files will not be the most convenient way to do everything, it's not a one size fits all solution.

When Apple announced the Files App, I assumed it would be an easy way to view and open files from all sorts of directories (iCould Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, etc).

However

  • Dropbox and iCloud Drive don’t really work in Files
  • When I click on a word or excel file in Files, I get a kind of preview window - Word and Excel don’t open the file like they do on a Mac

As a result, Files is pretty useless now. When will these issues be fixed?
According to some Apple fans here, the files app is the best possible app ever and betters Finder and Explorer found in macOS and Windows respectively. I mean who saves files on hard drives anymore? Everything is either in the cloud or wired directly to your brain. I expect the next iPhone to drop inbuilt storage completely in favor of iCloud.
I strongly recommend that you continue to use the files app even if it is of no use to you. I do it everyday and I have grown to like it and all those beautiful colored tag circles and iCloud toggles.

Thing of beauty!!

Right. Streamlining is dependent on the developer. Again, Pages/Keynote/Numbers all now work with the file in place by just tapping the file in the files app (whether in Dropbox, Google Drive, or iCloud) and it will skip Preview and go right into Edit mode ala the Mac. After making edits, going back to files will auto save any changes. In terms of how an app can associate a file type (ie who owns what file type), that I’m unclear on.

This is my main issue as a Word owner. Maybe my issue is with Microsoft for not really integrating with iCloud Drive and Files. Using Word with Dropbox works well. I changed everything over to DropBox a couple of days ago, and it works seamlessly (just not within Files).

Why are you complaining about cloud, when this is an upgrade to iCloud Drive, to GIVE you ability to save locally?

DO PEOPLE READ BEFORE THEY COMPLAIN.

The worst thing is if you have multiple photos in a folder, you can preview one but can't swipe between them!! Gotta view them one at a time!

how does that work? i swear if you need a computer science degree to understand an app that should be easy in handling, it automatically failed. i went back to Documents 6 in the meantime
