Of course you need Android 5.0 first to be able to use this feature. But any saved backup from the Google servers or if you have another Android device with NFC, all it takes is a tap and your new phone is set up like your old one. It was a so simple and easier than having to deal with iTunes.

Finally Google admits it has to centralise its backup process, maybe now we'll see a single decent app for getting data on/off an Android phone and people will be happy about it.

This is a pretty significant policy change by Google, from we don't manage things centrally to this. This isn't so much a feature, but Google getting their heads out of their own asses and recognising that at least some kind of central control on the beast they created is a good thing.

This has been working for a long time, the difference is a nicer UI and the ability to choose which backup set and which apps you want.

Google backup/restore isn't advertised but works great for 90% of apps, the ones that don't work are because the devs haven't taken advantage of the Google services.

Hmm, where do you get this set up? I've only had Google restore my contacts and stuff like that, but never all my apps and data. I'd love to look into that, wish I had it Friday when I was setting up my Note 4 and had to reinstall everything.

Hopefully this will be as seamless as Apple's solution. Even though iOS is stuck in the stone ages, I must admit their backup and restore is incredibly seamless and should be the model for everyone else.

Its a setting inside the Google app, under 'Backup & Reset' in settings. Also when you setup a new phone, the signin process will ask you if you want to backup apps data to Google and restore.

Not all apps are supported but most are.
