That's what surprised me. It was $10 a month and $120 for 12 months, I initially thought I had missed something.

I just got my first DSLR (nikon D3300) and am feeling the limitations on iPhoto. I was all set to buy Aperture the day before they announced they were ceasing development. I want lightroom but $150 for a stand alone license or $10 a month for the subscription is a lot to pay when your in college. (The camera money was money I had saved on the side for a few years).

I wish Apple would surprise everyone with the new Photos app, but I don't see that happening. Plus, Lightroom is probably the most future proof software to learn and adapt to.

EDIT: You know, it's the little expense you forget about! Reviewing my bills I realized I'm spending $20+ a month at Subway on campus! Bring food from home and buy lightroom and I'm still coming out better!

Adobe (like many software companies) offer educational discounts on their products. You can save substantially on Adobe products including LR.

It's still $10 a month, you just get more programs like Photoshop, which I don't need.

You can use the educational discount on the Lr5 standalone, but as Traverse pointed out it does not apply to the subscription plan.

While we don't know much, the fact that early screen shots show a "Levels" adjustment brick, indicates they're being a little bit more ambitious than the average Soccer Mom shooter. ;)
Oooooh...Levels adjustment!! You mean like in Preview.app, right? That's some exciting stuff right there.

Matter of fact, I'm about to ditch my workflow and go with Apple software when it comes out, I hear they're gonna get levels adjustment bricks. :D

At the moment, Lightroom is offered not only as a subscription but stand alone. You can enjoy a nice educational discount from that version. The consensus appears to be that LR will be subscription only when the new version hits the streets. That's when you'll probably not see much of a benefit.

I'm using the LR trial now, the interface is a bit busy, but I'm learning. Overall, it feels cramped on a 15.4" display, but I don't want to loose Retina quality by using my external display.

I think you'll get accustomed to the interface, though I do like aperture's non-modal interface. I guess I have to change my work flow habits to make LR a better fit, but I find myself bouncing between the Library and Edit models. I think I need to do all my tasks in the Library module and then move on to the edit module. That's one complaint I have.

Use your external display. Put all the sliders on that, and your image on your retina display full size. The second screen option is on the left near the bottom.

Either that or get a better second screen. Apple displays aren't that good for colour accuracy and controlled brightness.

Thank you, I wasn't aware of that mode yet.

I've gotta say, I've been using LR5 for about 2 weeks now on the trial and I'm really starting to like it. It's tools are much better than iPhoto's

I still don't know the best way to sync to iOS thought. I don't really want to use LR mobile and sync through the cloud so I thought about exporting my library as 3.5MB JPEGS and keeping a separate iPhoto library just for synching.

That's the downside of going with adobe. The lack of integration as compared to Apple products. There's ways around this, but nothing as seamless as Aperture

Trey Ratcliff exports his special photos (family, 5stars, etc) to iPhoto. That would be the easiest way I think to solve the problem.

Not to be snarky, but I wouldn't call anything that deals with iCloud Photo Library etc "seamless." Perhaps it's too early (although then why is it here?), but it's a hot mess. And Apple has made it downright difficult to use some stuff with photos; look at the lack of external storage on iOS devices, and poor RAW support on iPads as an example (to be fair RAW processing on a mobile device is always gonna be a challenge). I gave up on the iPad as a device to work on photos, and although that isn't Aperture's fault I feel Apple just doesn't play nice with anything but the iPhone camera these days.

And as for integration on the desktop, I went with LR because it actually was EASIER to integrate with other Mac stuff I had; YMMV. Apple killed stuff like the nice sharing feature older versions had, and then there was Photostream, which was awful.

I prefer my applications to just keep to themselves, thank you, and not force me into Apple's horrid cloud (dis)services. I am really, really, really hoping that the new Photos isn't too integrated with this junk, lest it be unusable.

Sorry to rant, but I've obviously been disappointed by Apple's support of photography. Adobe has issues, but at least it tries.

I still use iPhoto and it's strictly for syncing and creative stuff (photos books, prints, etc.). I don't use it to organize.

I really hope iCL let's us continue to make photo books and such.

I got the feeling Apple will care wayyyy more about Apple Watch than us little photo bugs in the coming months.

I'm not using any iCloud photo library. All my stuff was moving some images from AP to my iPhone. That worked easily and seemlessly. As for Apple's iCloud stuff, I'm not really using that (except for emails), so from that perspective it works well and I've not run into issues.
