well, today after a painful experience with aperture i checked mY page outs on my iMac that currently had 1x1GB. around 50,000 age outs. My macbook with 2GB has 0 page outs always, so i finally gave in. I ordered another gig from newegg, i cant wait for it to come.

ya. you want 0 page outs. if you have a large number fo them, you need more ram.

Activity Monitor (System Memory pane)...you'll almost always have some page outs, but if the page in/page out ratio starts creeping up, that's a sign that you may need more RAM. There's no firm ratio you should use to determine whether you need more RAM, as it's really machine performance that you should use as a gauge. But if the ratio drops to something like 3:1 or so, you should think about more RAM.

Page ins and Page outs - Help reading stats

I have a new iMac 20 Core 2 and have been experiencing a lot of disk usage and slow start-ups. I have 1 gig and was wondering if this is a memory issue. I just checked the activity monitor and these are my stats. Am I out of memory?

Active: 552.9
Inactive: 280.8
Used 1003.86

Free 20.75 MB
VM: 16.01 GB

Page ins/outs: 1433984/1100975

Am I crying out for more memory?

Both of you guys should think about more memory...bear1973 in particular. Page ins/outs is one measure of the need for more RAM, and my general rule of thumb is of is that if the ratio slips below 3:1, you should think about more RAM. But the most important factor is system performance...if your system is bogging down, more RAM is the easiest way to remove those bottlenecks.

Hmm, my mac is so new but you say my 1Gb is lowly :( Games don't lag But maybe it's just 'coz of the iMac G5 transition that my perception of speed vs. yours are totally different:eek:

Hello all,

I have an iMac with 1GB, got it when I ordered. Figured better to have a single 1GB, then add another 1GB, instead of flushing the 512MB and buying two 1GB.

I have a question: does the Apple 1GB play nice with other manufacturer's RAM, like crucial for example?

As long as you buy high-quality RAM, it'll be fine. Crucial RAM is great stuff but expensive, and the company engages in some sketchy pricing tactics, so I refuse to buy from them. I trust OWC and DMS for my RAM purchases...better prices and better companies that know Macs, sell great products, and stand behind their products.

Thanks for the tip! I'll look into it!

One other question: on one of these companies' site, they have "econo" and "non-econo" memory. There is a difference of 25$ and the main difference seems to the the lifetime warranty. I don't mind the price difference, unless it is totally useless. Do you know more about this?

I spring for the ones with the full lifetime warranty for the peace of mind. RAM can fail over time, so I want the protection of knowing they'll replace it if I have a problem.

That said, the pricing difference is larger than it used to be...you're paying a 25% premium at DMS for the extra warranty. I might be tempted to risk it and go with the EconoRAM...it's still good stuff.

It's a tough call.

Hmmm, I don't really know what it means but I have 2GB in my C2D iMac and it shows Pages in / out : 21946 / 0 ....

I'm guessing that is Normal or good? :confused:
