Hmmm, I don't really know what it means but I have 2GB in my C2D iMac and it shows Pages in / out : 21946 / 0 ....

I'm guessing that is Normal or good?

That's great...0 page outs is the ideal situation. In reality, it's tough to avoid them entirely, so don't panic if you get a few. You're looking great so far, though it looks like you recently rebooted, so longer-term numbers will tell a better story.

phewww. :)
Thats good to know, thanks man.
My computer was rebooted about 10 hours ago.

I'd be more interested in the total page outs than any ratio. If your machine is doing an inordinate amount of page outs for long periods, you can definitely benefit from more memory.

Looking at the ratio helps account for the amount of data you're moving in and out of RAM, and thus in part accounts for the length of time since your last reboot.

That said, strictly going by page outs isn't always the best way to tell. In general, my PowerBook performs very well with 1.5 GB. But if I glance at my current page ins/outs, it doesn't look so good (95541/79977). But I know that I had an incident yesterday that account for a lot of page outs. (I was trying to copy and paste a large, formatted table from Safari into Excel and Safari choked on it and started paging out like crazy.) Aside from that one incident, my performance has been fine. So really the most important thing is how your system feels to you most of the time.

my olds have a MBP with 1.5GB RAM in it, and one day i put the gig stick in my macbook, and it flew! Eveything i threw at it, it caught and processed almost instantly.

I checked the prices of gig sticks at Streetwise, and the gig stick i got 4 months ago for AUD$175 is now AUD$215. I thought RAM prices were coing down :(

if i werent building another bass guitar id spend the money on nother gig too.

isnt that always the way...

I've got 23173 in/0 out with i tunes, safari, acquisition x, and quicktime open and a bunch of other crap. Thats pretty good right?

Also, how do you check for page ins/outs in windows?

What does inactive, active, wired RAM, etc. Because as I open more programs it seems that more ram is inactive.

well, today after a painful experience with aperture i checked mY page outs on my iMac that currently had 1x1GB. around 50,000 age outs. My macbook with 2GB has 0 page outs always, so i finally gave in. I ordered another gig from newegg, i cant wait for it to come.

nice! i dont use aperture but i use many many programs at once or some high end memory eating programs, and my 1 gig usually covers 1 or 2 of those high end programs, if i could use more than one it would be fantastic so i BTO 2GB on my 20" imac
