At $19.99, it seems to be a GREAT deal. You are getting a 720pHD and iPod/iPhone version, can be transfered to to authorized Macs, shorter time spent downloading.

If you were to buy a Blu-ray DVD @$19.99, rip it with MTR, convert it with Handbrake, long time spent doing all this. You get the same result as buying from iTues.

Your thoughts?

yes but I can take that blu-ray to a friends house, and I don't have to worry about backing up multi TB of Hard drive space, 5gb~7gb a pop adds up quick. Then there's extra's and 7.1 lossless sound that you will be missing. Sorry I'll pass on the buying downloads.

HD Movies

I was able to watch Quantum of Solace last night in HD via ATV and I have to say it was very nice. The picture quality was great. I think the HD movies are going to be great.

Then you have to worry about putting a disc away everytime you are through playing one.

Extras? I think I have only watched the extras on maybe five discs out of the 30 or so I do own.

Sorry, I'll pass on owning the discs and keep on buying my movies on iTunes. Plus, I would have to buy a Blueray player and an HDTV which I don't plan on buying for a least a few more years.

I am more than happy playing my movies on my 23" ACD. I don't even know what 7.1 sound is, I just have a stereo setup with two speakers. I would also be willing to bet that the majority of people in the U.S. don't own a blueray player or even an HDTV set, the reason why the HDTV transition has been moved back.

Have you actually tried playing one of these HD movies from iTunes on your ACD? From what I have heard it doesn't work, because the ACD does not have HDCP support. Perhaps this is only with the newer computers though. See thf ollowing link:

I have major ADD. By the time I'm done looking through the boxes of DVDs to figure out what I want to watch, I'm already over it. Having it at arm's reach is more important to me than the limitations it has.

Yes, I have actually purchased two of them so far and watched both of them on my gorgeous 23" ACD. Works perfectly and the picture quality is 100% perfect. I bought the Lucky Ones and Religulous.

One of the comments at that link says that it only affects users with the miniDP computers and a non-HDCP display. Does anybody here have one of the new Macs and an older display that can attest to this?

These ARE valid points. However, they pertain to a very narrow subset of US customers: Videophiles will enough discretionary cash to have the top home theatres in their homes. During this recession, this subset of customers is likely to decrease. (A BR player, suitable HD display, BR movies...most of which are still above $20 a piece, and a 71. lossless sound system will cost quite a bit more dough than a 1TB drive to back up movies...)

I still hope apple lowers the price on OLDER HD movies to the $15 range however.

Just finished watching Quantum of Solace and I have to say I was quite impressed. Did not regret the purchase.
I also have a PS3 and an HD DVD Player. Sure, 1080p discs look better on my 6ft screen, but only slightly better and that is quite a feat. I have to admit that my projector is only 720p anyway, but it accepts 1080/24 and the difference shows.
There seemed to be a slight softening in the wide shots but considering that this download is 3,54 Gigs vs. roughly 40 (?) on the BR that was to be expected.
I also wanted to see how an upscaled DVD compares to this but it was not even close. I watched a recent release which looked great on my 42' Panasonic Plasma upscaled but on the big screen suddenly everything seemed out of focus.
Can't say much about the audio since my system does not playback all the new lossless audio formats so it is Dolby or DTS for me whatever the source.
For the record - I just ordered 4 BD discs of movies which are definitely keepers for me but with this Bond flick (which can't hold a candle to Casino Royale imo) the download was perfect.

Now Apple, bring on more GOOD movies. This is great for sudden urges to own something in the middle of the night and there is still lots of space on my Drobo!

Hmm... nothing new in the iTunes HD Movie section (actually, they've removed one title, but I can't figure out what it is since the majority of them were crap).

Here's hoping we start to see some more titles soon!

Yeah apple, I want more and better HD Movies pronto! I like the quality of the movies I have downloaded already, one thing that would be even better is added subtitle support, but I understand that depends on the stupid movie company that released the movie.

To get both an HD version and one that can go on the ipod/iphone is awesome. I love it.

I love apple!
