BAD New!

Although the screen is okay the Optical drive isn't!

I was using Handbrake to move some of my Comercial Perchased DVD's over to my touch and it ate a disc. It won't come out and it won't stop clunking.

The disc is fairly new, never sat in the sun and never even played. Its a Disney brand movie.

I tried holding the mouse button down and it just clunks and total takes 15 minutes to get to the desktop.

I called Apple and they said to take it to a depot! Great, I am a shift worker who is some how supposed to get to a 9am to 4pm shop, perfect.

I am not tainted towards Mac's... friggin 2700$ and they can't get an optical drive to work?

The 24" iMac I ordered from Amazon.com came with a bad optical drive. Apple gave me a pre-paid FedEx shipping label. 24 hours after I dropped off the old one at Kinko's/FedEx, the new one was delivered. :D

The Apple support I spoke with gave me no option for an exchange.

I had to drop it off at "MicroAge" in town as they are the only Apple Cert. repair shop here. The guy didn't sound to excited about having to take an iMac apart.

I'm VERY worried he will damage the screen. It was so very perfect when dropped off with no bleed no dead pixels and no gradiant issues.

If it does then I'm going to exchange it and ask if I can exchange it for the 130$ more and get the top of the line model that way if in the future there are any issues I can just walk in with a dud and walk out with a new one.

This is terribly concerning and has shaken my 'faith' in the Mac/Apple brand. Heck why not buy a Dell or a Gateway I have both of those for years without hardware failures.

hmmm, if a Mac has a problem in the first 2 weeks then they ship it back & ship out a new one ??

I got my first one on a Thurs, discovered stuck pixels galore, called Apple the same day. 20 minutes later they agreed to send me a FedEx label via email to ship back the defective one and said they would start building my replacement (was CTO) as soon as the label was scanned by FedEx. Had a perfect replacement in a week (actually 8 days due to Memorial day holiday in the middle).

That's how I got my replacement iMac so quickly. Once they see that the label was scanned by FedEx, they ship the new one overnight. :)

I should have insisted on a return.

Only downside to the return/exchange is the DVD is stuck inside the drive and it was a real commercial dvd, not a rip/copy.

The mac is with microage (where apple told me to take it) and the dvd drive is supposedly getting replaced well.... monday. so thats now 7 days of lost productivity.

The part that makes me very uncomfortable is that microage isn't answering their service phone and they have my $2700 investment in their hands.

Well.....

DEAD PIXELS now!!!!!!!

I called AppleCare today after getting the iMac back late yesterday afternoon and they are going to send me shipping labels in 24 to 48 hrs and I am to ship the iMac back to them and they will ship a new BTO mac back.

The downside to this is that the Mac must come again from China to Alaska to Tennessee to Mississauga, Ontario to Kingston, Ontario to Belleville, Ontario so it can get to my door. I can't see them doing that is 2 to 3 days.

Just as the sales rep was finishing the call I mentioned that Apple sells expensive computers and I paid a lot of money for what should have been a perfect computer out of the box and I think Apple only understands dollars and asked what can be done about this issue and my lost time. They offered a small rebate/partial refund on the computer of $100.

Considering my hourly wage I think they are assuming it took 2 hours of my time to send the computer in for repair, pick it up, place service calls and have lost productivity. But hey, it all adds up.

From now on, I will only buy refurbishment computers since they are tested.

I hope the replacement has fewer issues.

That sucks man. For stuff like screens (or computers with screens) I like to get them at places like Futureshop so I can see them in action a head of time. I am all for refurbs though. Considering just about any refurb mac will get the job done (who cares if its slightly slower then the newest model), you save a ton of money. I got my almost 3 year old PM G5 for 700 bucks local sale, and it kicks the crap out of any new mini. :D

I don't get it.
It was perfect screen then another day it has dead pixels??
Smells ******** or your iMac was replaced.
Check serial ## before you ship it back

I thought the same... a swap perhaps had been done....

but nope, its the same computer with the same serial number and the base is still branded with the same serial number as well.

When I called AppleCare they checked the SN as well. You can go to the About this mac in the Apple menu and click on the 10.5.4 then click again and it will show you the SN.
