I agree with OP. Find my friends and other apps like health, stocks, watch, etc should not be integrated into the OS but rather be offered as a downloadable option. Remember the infamous Newstand app?

Just like the apple apps imovie, Pages, Keynote, Garageband, etc, Find my Friends and the other apps mentioned above should be designed like that.

GarageBand, iMovie, Pages, Keynote and so on are apps, creative and utility. Things like Health and Find My Friends are iOS features. So no, they shouldn't be standalone downloads.

I have a few questions I am hoping you guys can answer about this app and the way it works.

Question 1 (prefaced with details):

I don't use Find My Friends, nor do I want to share my location for a set period of time with anyone for any reason.

However, I do like to send my current location via Messages app (just a one time snapshot of my location).

Is there a way to keep the "Send my current location" option in Messages working, but disable the Find my Friends and the sharing of my location for periods of time?

Question 2:

If I keep "Share my location" in iCloud settings on, and keep location services in Find My Friends on...when does my location get used?

My concern is battery life.

Do I have to accept a request or initiate sharing (ex. "Share my location for 1 hour" in messages app) for it to go into effect?

So, perhaps I could leave the "share my
Location" option in iCloud on and location services for Find my Friends on in case I ever want to use them...just so long as they're not using my location unless I initiate it.

If it doesn't share anything or track me via GPS unless I choose to share, then it shouldn't be a battery hog right?

Thanks in advance for the answers. This is confusing to me.

They should, IMHO, be optional, inasmuch as users should be able to choose whether to access those features or have them hidden. I don't use Health or Stocks (or Watch) and see no reason to have them displayed even if capacity isn't an issue. I can hide Podcasts and News using the restrictions menu in Settings, but would like to be able to do the same for other built-in services.

Yes to both your questions. FMF is independent of sending current location. you can disable FMF and share location thru many apps like imessage, whatsapp, skype, etc.

correct, its not a battery hog since it only gives out your location when requested by your friend, if your FMF is ON and shared. technically someone can keep pinging you every 2 secs, but then you've other problems.
