Forgive the necro-posting, but this is an ongoing issue for me and I have not resolved anything to today. I have been doing my computer work is short sessions with frequent breaks in recent months, using a wooden barstool as my "office chair". This is a miserable experience. Many other tasks and challenges have distracted me from shopping for a good office chair.

Well, now I'm back, and it is well past-time to resume shopping for a chair.

I intend to take as many tips from this thread as possible and apply them to finding a good chair. Crossing my fingers...

I bought a Steelcase office chair around 1981 or 1982 and am still sitting on it right now. Very comfortable, good support and it's stood the test of time. I saw them at a client's office and really liked them and went to an office supply store and bought one and I've used it since. It cost $180 back then which was a lot of money for a chair.

I also have a number of side chairs. A large company did a slow motion closing of plants and was eventually acquired but they sold a lot of office stuff really cheap - as long as you could haul it away. I got a number of Steelcase side chairs for $20 each. I also got two work tables (they feel like they could support a 500 pounds per table). Sometimes you find a liquidation of an office replacing all of their furnishings and you get lucky.

1981. Wow. I would be amazed by 2001, let alone 1991.

Update:

After reviewing some of their YouTube videos, I shopped over a BTOD (Behind the Office Door) where they refurbish and sell used premium office chairs. I bought a refurbished Steelcase Leap V2 for over $600. That was really stretching my budget, but I had to move forward. The difference between this chair and that miserable old wooden barstool is immense. Now I will have the freedom to move forward with more changes to clean up and improve my office space. I am now looking into WFH ("work from home") options. The "new" Steelcase chair is excellent, although a bit of a pain to assemble. I guess this means I'm closing out this old thread. If I want to discuss office chairs, this Steelcase, or other WFH topics, I'll start up new discussions for them.

A picture of the assembled chair would be nice.

Looking forward to a review of BTOD and the chair, I am in the market myself and torn between the HM Aeron and the Steelcase Leap.

Ah - the classic 431 chair. Sat in one for about 15 years are the start of my career. Generally the only problems are arms get banged up on desk edges, fabric gets stained, and the casters get gummed up.

If you want a nice upgrade try these casters They roll much more smoothly and are very quiet on hardwood floors. I can push back from desk with just a finger.
