First time poster, long time reader ;)

I have almost pulled the trigger on two new 24" iMACs for the wife and I, but have been hesitant with the "freezing" and "gradient" issues. I am to the point that I am just going to risk it and deal with returns if I must. Drooling to switch and can't quite bare waiting much longer.

I am going to upgrade to 2GB ea via third party. I could put 1 of the 1x1gb in one iMAC and just buy a single 2gb chip for the other to leave open upgrading to 4gb easier?

I am looking at buying two of these: Anything I should think of changing, or waiting?

In looking at the specs on apple's website, don't the 2.8GHz iMacs come with a minimum of 2GB of memory?

By the way, I'm in the same exact boat as you and I've waited so long and am having a hard time waiting any longer. I would like to have some confirmation that if I order from apple online, I can get an iMac with Leopard pre-installed but I haven't found any evidence of that yet on the net. But otherwise, I'm looking to order the same machine you have listed above. Good luck with your purchase.

If you look at any of the computer tech specs, you will see in the last section in the specs, under software(i think) that it says it comes with leopard installed.:apple:

and one thing to change for the two iMac's, send the shipping address of one of them to me :D How are you getting just 1Gb of ram Sandman? are you not ordering through apple?:apple:

I just checked now and looked in the section you mentioned. It says... Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard (includes Time Machine, Quick Look, Spaces, Spotlight, Dashboard, Mail, iChat AV, Safari, Address Book, QuickTime, iCal, DVD Player, Xcode, Developer Tools)

So it may include it as a DVD drop in but I'm really looking to just order an iMac with it pre-installed. Since it doesn't say one way or the other, I'm going to assume that it's just a DVD in the box. I'm sure I'll stumble upon a posting from someone saying their new iMac came with Leopard on it.

Thanks for the info though.

I built off of the 2.4GHz, which saves me about 150 or so forgoing the upgrade to the memory, which I can add later.

The two boxes sitting in my Cart is just begging me to push continue...

Do it. The 2.8 24" is an amazing machine. I've love every second I've spent on it so far.

I purchased the stock 2.4ghz 24" machine with a cto option for the wireless keyboard about a week ago, it did not come with leopard preinstalled, which is fine by me. I have no freezing or gradient issues or yellowing or boogeymen or leprechauns either.

My wife refuses to "learn" a new OS. So, she's stuck in windows xp hell. The thing is that she really is only a basic user in windows. (47 years of age). Considering she never really learned the first OS, I can't see the challenge of another OS since she'll be equally clueless with it. I *know* that she'd gravitate to the mac, but she refuses to even try.

I certainly didn't marry her for her tech skills.

Good to hear, do you do any gaming? I really only play WoW when I get free time, seems to play WoW good from what I have read, so happy in that regard. Mainly want a good system for music recording, movie making, and for the UNIX under the hood.

LOL

How long does :apple:.com generally take to fill an order in the US?

Also, can they run 3GB RAM or do they need/better to be equal pairs

The :apple: bullet has left the chamber! :D:D
So can these run with 3GB? Or better to run with 2x2GB? Got to make sure memory is here and ready.

Nice job Sandman! With such a good deal available on the 2x2GB from OWC, I find it hard to pass up the opportunity to have 4GB purring away...:D

When you get your iMacs, post up if they have Leopard pre-installed.

Not tried it (I have 4gb) but from everything I've read, it will work fine with 3gb and it makes no difference to the speed if it's a matched pair or not.

I hope you have a lot of desk space if you're ordering two! ;)

Dude! That's why you dual boot, parallels, or fusion! That's what I'll be doing.

btw, I have the same specs in my shopping cart, just trying to time this thing right for it to arrive after I return from vacation.

Congrats on pulling the trigger. with 4gb, there will be no regrets since it can't get any faster.

Everything I've ordered from Apple in the past few years has arrived earlier than they suggested it would, so I'd allow some margin.

Oh, forgot, why do you say AppleCare all the way? why should I get it? (is it cheaper with edu disc?)

I think just to cover your tail better, with longer phone support as well as an additional 2 years of warranty coverage.

You do save $50 bucks on :apple:care with the edu discount.

my finger is also on the trigger

Sadly, my wife is not supportive of my buying yet another computer that she thinks I'll simply use as a toy. She has a fairly fully decked out HP MediaCenter PC running an evil OS as well as an MB running Tiger. She claims she needs all that for her video-editing projects (it's just a hobby). I'm an IT professional, and I have all older equipment running Linux and one fairly modern MediaCenter PC running an evil OS. I use my stuff for work as well as for tons of TV recording. And, yet, I get an unfriendly look from her when I express excitement about getting a Mac. :(

So... I have two questions for this forum:

1) What do you think of the base 20" iMac? I only plan to use it for general computing, to watch recorded TV shows and maybe to serve NFS/smb to the other computers at home (and using TM as a single-point backup service for the entire house). I will upgrade the RAM to 2 or 3 GB using 3rd party DIMMs.

2) Is this grounds for divorce? ;)

Get the 20" 2.4 with 4gb :)

Thanks for the advice. and thanks to those who replied about the Applecare. I guess it will be even cheaper buying from ebay? how reliable are those dealers on ebay when buying something like this?
