Problem is you don't get access to Google services. Its just a phone you buy to help you spend more money easily.

In which case just buy a regular smartphone and download the Amazon app and an image search app and call it a day.

Can you side load apps or root the phone? Without much of the google experience I think its seriously hamstrung, and even at 199, its not worth it.

It's fairly simple process. You just need to enable installation from "other sources" and have the apk file. no root required. I think majority of android apps will work. The few that depend on google services *may not* work.

It's a very good deal for amazon shoppers. Don't forget, 199 includes 1 year of prime membership. so phone is basically just 99.

Anyone pick this phone up?

Yeah - my prime membership was set to renew tomorrow, so I picked one up over the weekend. Today is the first day of using it as my daily - decent so far - I would prob go back to my 6+ after a week, but thought I'd give it a chance.

I was able to sideload a few apps (you just need apk files), but nothing with Google services - which makes it a no go for me.

Now, the phone is $449.00. Yikes!

Yup - that's the normal price. The $199 price point was a Black Friday/Cyber Monday thing I believe.

That's why I figured "why not" and ordered one. It'll be here sometime between the 17th and 24th. Then I'll see if I can find a use for what is essentially a $99 portal to Amazon services and products.

Yeah, I figured that. Let's us know how you find it.

If they want to clear out inventory and work on the next generation of this phone, there's no way it should cost $450. $200, fine as that's inline with their tablets. But not $450

I wonder if they are going to just forget about the phone industry. They took at huge hit with the fire phone, and at $199 they are definitely losing money.

Probably cost them about $250 just to build the phone.

Yeah, with the "fire" sale at $199 (actually it's $229 today if you google "unlocked" amazon fire phone). But regardless Amazon will have to rethink their phone strategy. Very hard to break into the cellular phone buisness unless you want to focus on being a budget high end smartphone (aka Nexus 4/5 and the One Plus) with razor thin margins.

From listening to Bezos, he will come out with another edition. We'll see if there are any significant changes in hardware, software, and price.

Ok - did anyone pick up this phone and get their iCloud email to work? I'm having issues....

One thing I read says the phone should automatically configure iCloud accounts but mine didn't. So I manually input all the settings and it still won't work.

I guess this may give my an opportunity to try out MayDay :)
