I’m not sure if I understood you correctly (‘login password’), but a firmware password does not protect your data. It only hinders other people from booting to something else than the startup disk.
Yes, I realize that but the level of deterrence offered by the firmware password is enough for my needs, if they want to access my data that bad, they can have it.

It is super easy to take a drive and connect it to another computer, work of a few minutes. Either the data is encrypted and secure, or it isn’t secured at all.

How long does it take to encrypt a 300 G drive ?

An SSD probably up to an hour. An HDD could take a couple of hours. The process happens in the background on the fly, you only have to reboot once and can use the computer normally.

Thanks for infos, I may do that when leaving computer for an extended period of time.

You don’t need to wait for it to complete. You can just shut down the computer or put it to sleep whenever you want. It will pause and resume the encryption process automatically, as it encrypts the data block by block. It’s really care-free. :)

I followed your advice and decided to encrypt the drive, no big deal really, I should have done it earlier. Thanks for suggestions.
