yikes. now i'm just afraid.

I honestly wouldn't get worried at this point. Even though it is impossible to say whether or not systematic issues are present, these are just a hand full of anecdotal reports relative to likely millions of sales. Do note that failures of electronic devices can be higher when the device is brand new than the several years that follow, as hardware defects might not surface until the device is used for a bit.

To the OP, thanks for the clickbait hyperbolic thread title. As has been noted there is a failure rate for any electronic device. One case doesn’t indicate a mass failure.
For those getting service for a M1 product , there is nothing to service. Changing out the system board is the only available way to fix any issue. Why you should consider Apple care.

On a forum, I think it needs to be recognised and commended when someone can correct a mistake or typo. No sarcasm... it's way too infrequent ?
Indeed. Funny isn't it, that in an relatively anonymous community we are so quick to act like azzhats to other folks in ways we'd never do in person, while at the same time we're so reticent to fess up when we've made a mistake. Kudos to Marshall73.

So chalk me up as another victim. After waiting 3 weeks received my new MBA M1 two days ago. Worked great for day 1 - next morning completely dead. Would not boot. Went through troubleshoting with apple support, no luck. Returned for refund. Surprisingly no resistance to the return - I am wondering if this is not more widespread than just a few odd instances.

there are always faulty products, no matter what they are when they first get released. I have a PS5 , yes its riddled with annoying bugs , but lots of people on reddit are saying theirs are broken completely. Does this mean they have all failed, no. PS4's had a failure rate of 0.5-1% on release (apparently according to some bloke on the net who was complaining haha ). I work in IT and I see a LOT of laptops and desktops break when we first get them, however we have over 2000 perfectly fine laptops and desktops. We tend to see more people shout out it's broken than say it works like its meant to do.

Not saying some M1 systems don't have issues, but in the grand scheme of things its probably not that many and within accepted failure rate.

Agreed. There has traditionally been a bit higher rate of issues with new models, and so much is new on the M1 models, I would not be shocked if failure rates for initial models are notably higher than mature models/designs. So if a normal failure might be about 1%, double the failure rate (2%) for M1 Macs, at least in the early production models, would not be shocking, nor would it stop me from buying one.

I am not in need of a new machine, so holding off for a few months at least...waiting to see iMacs at least, if not second generation.

I love my M1 MBA base. Made me realise for what I do , my old MBP 2015 with 16gb was overkill. This laptop wipes the floor with it and I never run into memory issues. Hopefully most people will have a good experience with them.

I've got mine repaired (they replaced the logic board and Touch ID power button) - after two days it got bricked again!

Are you able to use your USB-C dongles with M1 MacBooks without any issues?
