I can't see what the whining is about. And this certainly doesn't justify his statement that service is spotty in NYC. Click on where it says 'selected areas' and then pick New York, NY from the list. The entire metro area is fully covered.

Pogue is a very reliable reporter. He is not making up the fact that there is spotty coverage. he has an actual 3G iphone and is using the service throughout the area.

Many reporters have already tested AT&Ts 3G phone service with other models of 3G phone and have said the same thing. AT&T's coverage map is not entirely accurate. There are many holes and shadow areas in the 3G coverage.

So before you go contradicting what others are reporting, I think you have to assume coverage is very spotty and you will have to take this into account when deciding to be an early adopter of the new service.

nothing in the reviews surprised me. we all knew 3G would kill the battery life but it sounds normal. we're still talking about a better overall battery life.

i can understand lots of people complaining about the GPS. when people heard the iPhone 3G will have GPS, many assumed it will have turn by turn audio prompts etc. (i was one of them till i did some research here on MacRumors)

i'm sure everyone as seen Verizon and Sprint commercials for their iPhone "clones" that brag about it before the iphone 3g was announced. let's just hope the Tomtom App will indeed be introduced.

ps - i personally have a Garmin for my car and i have to say it's awesome. if you don't have one i suggest you try one out from a friend etc. and on battery life the GPS prob last no longer than 2 hours.

When I read reviews of battery life barely lasting a day I consider that a bad review. I have a Garmin Nuvi as well. I also have an iPod Classic and Touch.

I'd only buy the iPhone if it could replace all those devices competently. Otherwise I'm still carrying a Garmin GPS. I'm only going to view videos/music occasionally for fear of draining my iPhone battery. What's the value of the all in one when the battery is dead.

there is no excuse for not having a user-replaceable battery. the option for power users to add a high-capacity l(ion) and or carry multiple batteries is crucial. for somebody who's on the road a lot, the iphone is a very good option.

as for me... i'll be in line early friday morning.

after owning iphone for a year, I can honestly state that even if it spit flames at me periodically, I'd use it. it's so simple and so effective. it seems more like a communication gateway, whereas treo/bb/w.mobile devices seem like bulky cell phones.

I logged into MacRumors to see what the latest is and instead wind up at iPhoneRumors. Seriously, there 6 articles on the front page about iPhone!!! I long for the olden days when this forum was mostly about Mac Computers. I really wish Apple would spin the iPhone off into a separate company.

I'll go up a notch, I can't stand all these new iPhone users who own PCs calling themselves 'Apple users'. Damn iPod/iPhone users hanging around who seem to bash the Mac no end, but happy to own an iPhone/iPod.

Yeah. This I do not understand. You can have everything pushed and synced to the phone but...you can only have either business OR personal calendars or contacts on it? WTF is the point then?

I have a .Mac/MobileMe account where all my personal contacts are stored and synced with my phone now. But if I also want my business stuff to sync to the phone I can't have my personal stuff too? That is a big, big oversight. Seriously not happy with that. I guess I'll have to just deal with it just syncing my Exchange email and nothing else. That blows.

Just to confirm, this is BS - you definitely can sync MobileMe and Exchange calendars (and mail and contacts) via push to the same phone. No idea where this FUD came from...

So you'll have separate calenders, mail boxes and contact lists?

Why not? Most of us use Windows only because it's what you have to use if you want to buy a non-apple computer. You can't deny a significant disparity exists between apple's consumer electronics (ipod, iphone) and their actual computers.
