This is a more technical take on the "What are you listening to" thread.

The question I have is: so you just bought your new AirPods (Pro, Regular, or Max). What song do you listen to first?

Post the model: the song then a brief description why

For example
____________________________________________________

AirPods Max: "The Story" by Brandi Carlile

This song really tests the higher and lower volumes as the song starts as an elegy of sorts and turns into a rock tune.

As is the case every time I buy new headphones, the last movement of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, because I listen mostly to classical and this is a good/familiar test piece that has loud/bombastic sections and quieter, delicate parts, lots of dynamics. Followed up with Rush’s The Camera Eye to get a sense for how the bass end performs.

The Camera Eye by Rush is one of my all time favorite songs. I was fortunate to see them perform it live on their last tour. I will be following you lead Sir.

Thank you for posting this thread! I was considering doing the same thing in an attempt to distract from the multitude of puzzling negativity that tends to pervade virtually every thread about these new headphones.

To answer your question...

AirPods Max: Hotel California from the Hell Freezes Over Album.
Often my first go-to when I‘m trying out a new audio The combination of multiple acoustic guitars, percussion, and vocals at the beginning of this song are a great test of how well one can hear the separation between instruments.

After that...
Anything from Rush
Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson
Beethoven’s 6th
Jazz (eg, Dave Brubeck, Steve Kuhn trio)

Oh man, I remember back when that song came out, I was working in the electronics department in Wal-Mart, and it came on the radio... I stood there and listened to the intro in amazement (I mean, the whole song is cool, but that intro is bada**). I couple of other workers (who also played guitar) in adjacent departments came over, and were like "what was THAT?!?"

First was "All is full of love (video version)" by Bjork. After that, the entire Morning Phase album, by Beck.

I don’t think I finished a single song. I skipped through so many to try it out.

One of the first I tried out on the Max I just got -- "Honor" -- the title theme from the HBO miniseries "The Pacific". It has a pretty wide frequency range including a lot of deep kettle/bass drums that will almost always cause small speakers or headphones to distort at higher volumes. The Max played it back perfectly without any discernible distortion. So far impressed with them.
