First-time Apple product owner - ship vs pickup

I never own Apple products before due to many popular reasons: lock-down and controlled system, low value (premium price), etc. I did not even think about buying an ipad until last week. I just sold my laptop and ready to buy ipad.

I plan to get 32GB wifi and case. should I have it ship or reserve to be picked up?

if ship, how long would it take from shipping date? 5 to 7 days? I am located in NC.
if reserve to be picked up, can I just walk in the store on April 3 and pick it up without waiting in line?

Delivery is 4/3 if you have Saturday delivery in your area.

I think it's pretty safe to say that for store pickups there will be a line.

Don't do it! This will just open the floodgates and talking yourself into replacing EVERYTHING with apple products

Apple will email you when your items ship w/ FedEx tracking number but you can also get this info online too.

Hopefully this actually works. When I ordered the 5G Nano and Snow Leopard, the waiver didn't show up for me.

because there was such a high volume of orders already. If you didnt order the case within the first 24 hours you arent getting it til late April.

Yeah, but what he is getting at is that buying your first Apple product will act as a gateway into buying more of them because you will love it so much. The experience is mainly in the software. That is where you will notice the polish and usability over a PC based system. Especially using the iPhone based OS. Everything is slick, polished, and fluid. It generally reacts as you would expect it to. Very intuitive and easy to use with minimal maintenance. Welcome to the wide world of Apple!

I bought an iPhone 8gb in June 2007, a Macbook Pro 15" in March 2008, an iPhone 3g 16gb in July 2008, an iPhone 3GS 32gb in June 2009, and now an iPad 32gb. I haven't decided on getting the next iPhone yet. Depends on the specs as my 3GS is essentially perfection (though better battery and screen would be welcome). Between OS X and iPhone OS, I find that I enjoy iPhone OS more which is why I'm pretty excited about the iPad. Though I generally use OS X for work and school, and iPhone OS for more personal use such as browsing the web and gaming (well and also productivity), so perhaps that is simply a case of positive association.

My next purchase will be either a quad-core iMac or a quad-core 13" Macbook Pro. I haven't decided yet, but obviously if I get the latter I will be waiting awhile for such a machine. Though buying an iPad might make me lean towards a 15" MBP as I won't bring it everywhere with me (to class) like I would with the iPad. So you see where I'm going with this? Once you start its hard to stop. Though I don't always have to have the newest Mac, I usually want the newest iPhone type device because it is so amazing!

I have an Apple Store 5 mins from my house, yet decided to ship to my house.

Apple will ship your iPad to arrive on release day 4.3 (most populated areas) and I do not have to spend 1-2+ hours in line.
The Saturday delivery is NO CHARGE.

I read somewhere in the past couple of days that they were averaging 700 reservations per store. There will probably be 2 lines, one for those with reservations and one for those without them.

EDIT: It also looks like they might be running low on stock for launch day store pickup.

Yeah another victim here.

Got an iPhone 2G, then 27" imac, then 1TB Time Capsule, AppleTv, Airport Express, Magic Mouse to replace the Mighty Mouse, and now the iPad. Oh and an iPhone for my wife too.

I'm loving it, not missing Windows at all. Fewer software crashes, and most importantly no annoying popup message windows saying an update is needed. The controls are simple, and don't require a lot of digging through multiple layers of windows to find. And the form factor looks very sexy.

Uh oh, I hope that doesn't happen for the ipad. Where was the Apple Store you were at? I'm guessing in big cities the lines will be much longer than less populated areas.

Also, I'm still thinking that the iphone wait time is skewed because everyone getting an iphone has to activate it to the ATT service, while the ipad needs no activation at all. Hence, the store should be able to quickly check out the people buying ipads much faster.

The only saving grace is that the iPads will not require an activation process....just grab and go. I purchased my 3GS on launch in uptown CLT and was out of the store with phone in hand about 20ish minutes after doors opened.

I did not think that there was priority on those who reserve for pickup. It's not like they have it set aside in your name specifically, but rather they have a separate stack from the non-reserved to use from. If you lollygag and wait til say 2pm, then the reserved supply may be exhausted at the Apple Store, leaving you SOL. At 3pm, the reserved supply (if any remaining) then is opened up for grabs.

I'm pretty sure they will have everyone's name on a list that matches the number of iPads in their reservation stock. However, I don't think I'd show up at 2:45 that afternoon. I'd still get there early.
