Has anyone tried using a lightning to HDMI dongle to put fitness + on a TV? If so, did it work? If it worked, what brand dongle did you use? Thanks.

Some people online say they tried and get a black screen the moment Fitness+ launches the class. Looks like Apple has blocked 100% of ways to get Fitness+ on a tv short of an AppleTV HD or AppleTV 4k box.

update: someone else here said they got a usb-c to hdmi working from an iPad... maybe there is hope?

I did see that as well. Haven’t heard if lightning ones work or not though.

USB-C to HDMI adapter on iPad Pro 2018 11" to Samsung TV worked for me today. It was great for today's workout, and much easier than me having to move the iPad up/down/up/down for floor vs standing exercises like I had to yesterday.

I haven't seen anyone's iPhones or iPads work correctly with the lightning to HDMI connector, however.

They need to just make it work with AirPlay. It seems silly that even screen mirroring doesn't work right now.

I have a small 720p TV in my gym and connected to that I have an Apple TV 2nd Gen (720p capable) that I was excited to see had a software update this morning. So I thought maybe they'd added Fitness+ to this older box? I was disappointed to find that was not the case. "Okay", I thought, I'll do it on my phone and Airplay to the TV.

I was very disappointed to discover that Apple has actively blocked Airplay of any kind to anything other than AppleTV HD or AppleTV 4k. Even screen mirroring blacks out as soon as workouts start. What an absolute joke! Not only do you have to have an Apple Watch to access this service (not necessary - I was even given an option to do the workouts without when I had a pairing issue at first), but you have to upgrade your Apple TV just to airplay? This is a step too far. It's just Airplay! Why you'd you intentionally hamper this ability other than to push hardware upgrades? I can Airplay everything else to this TV just fine.

I don't want or need a newer Apple TV in my Gym. The TV is small and only 720p itself, the app selection on the 2nd gen has all I need, and I can airplay my other fitness apps to it no problem. I hope they reverse this decision.

I called Apple and they said the workouts have DRM on them. They said they won’t work on hdmi to lightening cables. It’s weird they work on usb c to hdmi cables on iPad Pro’s though?

they told me to request the feature at Apple.com/feedback. It’s worth a shot.

Seems like a massively missed opportunity for them. It’s so impractical to follow a workout on a tiny iPhone screen :(

Spooky. I did exactly that today 2. Got my old Apple TV 2 out the drawer hoping to AirPlay to it or use the app. Really stupid this doesn’t work. So many people are complaining about this. Surely Apple has to listen.

Little bit of a rant here, but I feel like Apple's become somewhat user hostile in the past year.

Oh you want Fitness+ on TV? Well, sorry you can't use your old AppleTV that supports mirroring and AirPlay, you have to use the latest AppleTV model! Oh... that's over three years old now and well overdue for a refresh.

Oh you all have chargers, we won't include one in the iPhone boxes... except that you have to have a brand new USB-C charger that runs minimum 20 watts now to use the new shiny MagSafe... :/ And all the chargers we've always included in the boxes before this year's iPhone were USB-A.. /shrug

I also submitted feedback. The person took my Apple ID to see if they could get back to me.
I can play videos of previews on my TV using the same lightning to HDMI adapter but cannot play the actual video - the same issue pops up for me. Not buying a 3-year old Apple TV.

Maybe they are afraid of piracy, i.e., someone will use airplay to record the workout videos. That was Netflix’s excuse to completely disable airplay a while ago when airplay was expanded to support some smart tv sets. Netflix has never prevented the use of HDMI dongles, however.

It might also have to do with the ability to display on screen the workout metrics measured by a connected apple watch.

Not quite true. 2019’s iphone 11 pro and pro max did come with a USB-C power brick and USB-C to lightning cable, while the less expensive iphone 11 and all prior generations did come with the older USB-A brick.

Did not know that. Figures, the one year I didn't upgrade my iPhone. Went from XS Max to 12 Pro Max. o_O So basically if you got the top of the line iPhone model in starting 2019 you'd have gotten USB-C... otherwise nobody else has.

I did. It didn’t work. I have apple’s own official lightning to hdmi dongle. I tried with my iphone XS and then with my 10.5” 2017 ipad pro. In both cases, I got the audio on the tv but no image, just like I did when I tried to airplay before.

I just bought a used Apple TV without remote in frustration for 65 dollars on Facebook marketplace. Returned my lightning to HDMI cable so only had to pay 15 dollars extra.

That’s my solution for you. See if you can find a used Apple TV that will do this. Just use it for this purpose and move on ... I think I had to cave in. But better than $150 dollars.

Has anyone tried using a lightning to USB-C adapter + USB-C to HDMI dongle? I'd love to know if that works.

Just attempted it:
Lightning to USB-C cable (that came with my iPhone 12 Pro Max). Connected USB-C end to an HDMI adapter (which doesn’t require it’s own power to function btw, and even tried with the power connected to the adapter). Connected HDMI cable from my dumb RCA TV to this adapter, to no avail: the screen remains without any input.
I dunno why I never thought of this idea. But it didn’t even recognize the adapter.

This is another picture with the power on. No screen mirroring happening. It all plays only on the iPhone.

The best thing I got is connecting an older iPad with the lighting HDMI converter to a TV. Open the Camera app and Putting your phone within the camera view of the iPad... a little ghetto but does the job
