I triple-boot using rEFInd, and FileVault 2 is pretty important to me.

At this moment I would just wait and see what Apple is going to do with Mojave beta, there is still a change that Apple will implement some sort of bootscreen for pc cards. I don't see them not supporting filevault on cMP's

How is you monitor hooked up?
Mine is using mDP with v1.2. EFI only does v1.1 and I have to swap the monitor mode with a hidden toggle to see the boot screen.

No this is not the case. With the Sonnet Card installed, no matter what video card is used on a MP 5,1 you will get no Apple boot screen. Using rEFInd, is the only way to get an actual boot menu, otherwise you get only a white screen. This is a known issue with these cards in a MP 5,1. I mentioned it as I didn't see which model the OP was using. If I want the Apple boot screen with the macvidcard, I have to take out the Sonnet Card.

You have the boot screen, you just can't use the Apple native boot manager because of the TempoSSD card's issue.

Boot screen on the cMP simply means the display ability before driver loaded. Not specifically to that Apple boot manager.

Must be with Nvidia graphics cards. I'm running a MVC flashed AMD R9 280X on two monitors.

280X is a very very different story. That Mac EFI actually came from the Sapphire HD7950 Mac Edition card. it's an Apple officially licensed card. The EFI was provide by factory, definitely can work on all ports. The only limitation so far is just can't boot with Display Port 1.2 connection.

I am trying to flash a gtx 750 ti, in order to upgrade my OS from El Capitan to Sierra on my MP 3,1. New to this so any help or suggestions would be awesome!

PS no access to a PC either, can I simply just run bootcamp and windows on this computer or do I really need a PC?

There is no publicly-available EFI firmware for the 750 Ti. You have to buy one pre-flashed, either through MacVidCards or from a shady ebay seller. EDIT: Or if you have one of the models he can work with, you can send in your 750 Ti to MacVidCards for him to flash it. Might want to wait until his "v2" EFI is available though, assuming he does follow through with it. See his site's blog for more details (macvidcards.com)

how About the gforce 210?

The only cards you can flash yourself are certain GTX 680 cards and certain Radeon 7950 cards (and variants like the 7970 and RX 280). The reason for this is those were the only two "Mac Edition" cards released onto the market, and people figured out how to dump the ROM and flash it to PC versions of those cards. To my knowledge, there aren't any other cards you can flash yourself.

There are lots of other AMD cards, but the list is a lot shorter with Nvidia ones:

  • PC versions of 8800GT (G92) and all the cards that has the same G92 GPU, like 8800GTS (G92), 9800GTX (G92) and some GTS 150 (G92b) GTS 230/240/250 (G92a/b). But some of these cards have different port layout and just one video port works plus sometimes we need to replace the SPI flash memory to one bigger.
  • GTX 680 and the first release of GTX 780, the A version that can use the same firmware of GTX680.

So without being able to see the boot screen how do I upgrade to Sierra? This is all to be able to use the new GTX 1050 ti OC. The last thing I want to do is guess. Plus I would have no idea when the heck I am sitting at the choice screen

Do you have another Mac to do the High Sierra install?

You can’t install 10.12/10.13 directly on the MP3,1, but once installed it’s a piece of cake to make it work, just add -no_compat_check to the boot-args.

You can use a patched 10.12/10.13 install, dosdude1, but if you have another Mac I don’t recommend any hacked install with Nvidia cards.

Once 10.13 working, it’s the best one with 10xx Nvidia cards, you install the Nvidia webdrivers and then install the 1050 on the 2008 Mac Pro.

I have the ability to get the patcher tool and the installer package. I just don't understand how to add the code to the boot arguments. I am fairly new to the mac world, simply need the machine for work. if there is a walk through tut or something I am willing to follow the instructions to a tee. just a matter of finding one.

Boot your El Capitan Recovery. Open Terminal.app and type:

Code:
csrutil disable
nvram boot –arg=”-no_compat_check -v”

With just this, you can boot a High Sierra disk installed by a supported Mac. You will need to add in another places, like boot.efi, but just in the NVRAM will do for now.

I am not sure I was clear. The only cards I have are a GForce 210, a gtx 750 ti and a gtx 1050 ti. I have no way to see the boot screen. I have tried command+s to enter single user mode, but nothing happend.

If you don't have a EFI card, you will need to install 10.6 to 10.9 and use it to edit files on the 10.13 disk. You can set boot-args with just Terminal from macOS, no need to enter Recovery. But to disable SIP, you need to boot Recovery from 10.11->.

To do what you want to do without a EFI card will be a hassle.
