Ok so now that I have MS Flight Simulator working great, I am really enjoying the sim. I am running on XP 32 bit so I am only using 2 gigs of ram. If I go to a 64bit OS will I see great improvement in performance. I don't want to spend the $$$ on Vista 64 if I don't have to. I was given a copy of XP 64bit but there are so many driver issues it has been a big project just to get it installed. I am thinking of just staying with XP32. Any advice???

I am just about to upgrade from XP32 Pro to Vista Pro 64. I had a terrible experience with XP 64. I will probably load Vista at the weekend so will let you know my experiences. I too have 4GB of RAM and I want FS (and some games) to be able to see it.

Liptnlover - thanks for the tips on X-Plane, it is a good sim.

I was just flying in MSFSX with XP32pro and opened task manager before the flight. I was viewing the memory usage and saw the bar never got over 1.2GB of the 2 GB that XP sees. If this is the case why would anyone need the 64bit verson for this game?
BTW I saw that all 8 cores we being used!

Flight Simulator X needs a monster machine to run smoothly

I have a top of the line MBP:

2.5 Dual Core
4 Gigs Ram
250 HHD
512 nVidia 8600

I use bootcamp on Windows XP and FSX still runs a bit choppy on Medium Settings.

What you really need is a $3000 machine.. X Plane is pretty good. Use that instead. It even feels better when you fly it.

If you still want to give FSX a try then I recommend locking your frame rates at 15 (to be honest that gives me what looks like a totally smooth appearance, but maybe that's just me). I have managed to get my settings to the level that gives me about a 70% graphics experience and no stutters etc.

FSX Vista Ultimate 64 bit

Running FSX and getting great frame rates and overall satisfactory flying experience but I am not able to change screen res from 1024x768. Changing to anything else in fsx.cfg crashes the program. Anyone else able to use a higher screen res with success?

I can run at 1200x1600. You may want to try to trash your fsx.cfg and have FSX rebuild a new one,

Hi all,
I Have a MAcPro first gen ( 1.1 ) with ATI 1900.

I run Vista 64 bits. Relaod ATI Drivers CAT 8.6. I dont install Vista Like Aplle say ! Because First Gen of MACPRO is not compatible vista 64. But it work fine.

So now about FSX, I get FSX Deluxe et Acceleration Pack. All work Fine ! FPS around 30 to 60 FPS On LSMM airport ( Swiss ).

So I read lots of tweaks etc. like many ! But it looks like, some tweaks is not really good, so i read the MS developper MSDN, and they talk about it. And is not to good to change the default setting in FSX.cfg. Why, is because FSX will look on the erea where you are and adapt it to your machine, as best it can ! So if you have change this ... may get funny FPS.

All I did change in the FSX.cfg is the CELL size, Memory bandwith, and POOL !

SO if I put 30 FPS as limite, all is very nice, very little stutter or not. dépenmds the erea.

I install, Uninstall couple times Vista and FSX, but always the same. And th e best I get is with minimal Tweaks and the défaut ATI drivers that come on DVD of leopard, but ATI catalyse 8.6 work fine.

SO hope can help some !!!

I will get soon a 8800 GT Apple ! Mostly to see you directX 10 work !

Nikita

PS : I Use the FA 18 Full version from Captain Sim - Windowed
or FSX 737 - 1920 x 1200 ( 30 FPS lock at 30 FPS )
MacPro : quad 2.66 - 3 GRam - ATI x1900 - Sound internal with Windows ( No 64 bits driver for my Pro sound board )

O,M,G. O,MFG :)

I have never in my born days seen such an improvement in performance as I have witnessed after upgrading from XP 32 pro to Vista 64 pro. Now that the system can 'see' my full specs (4GB RAM 2x2.8GHZ & 8800GT) I am getting stunning performance from FSX.

Woo-Hoo!!!!!!

That's Great
Do you think it's Vista or 64 bit giving you the better performance. I have XP 32 so it only sees 2 gb of memory but FSX never uses more that 1 GB.

You're kidding, right? I have a Penryn MBP (specs in signature). Bootcamp with 100GB Windows, 130GB Mac (formatted capacity is 230GB). All the settings in FSX at max except for traffic one down, and never stutters. Only stutters a little when using PMDG addon.

To be honest I'm not much of an expert so I don't know, maybe a combination of everything.

Hey all
I m planning of buying a new imac with the 8800gs in it. Could u tell me about the perfomance in FSX.

Thanks

Hello !
I get a MAcPro 1st generation, FSX works correctly ... no more .

I Juste get the NVIDIA 8800 GT, is a lot of money compare to the improuvement I get.

And very strange thinks ... Is X-plane 9, run much slower now, then the ATI !!!

All others PRO applications work fine, the looking of images like in FCP , shake etc. is good speed, even IN C4D ! But is less nicer images ( photographer way I mean ).

For nasdas : Dont get a MacPro, juste to run FSX, you can get much lower price in a PC. But if you running like me, In pro Imaging. yes yes Get the Mac Pro...

hope it help

Sorry for englishm but is not my language :p

PS : For the ATI X1900XT the drive 8.5 is better then 8.6

Thankould ges dude but how i said i'm planning of buying a new iMac. With a 2.8Ghz cpu and a 8800GS gpu (which is infact a 8800m GTS) and so I was wondering if it would have the same perfomance as the MacPro(2.8Ghz and 8800GT) what would be wonderful, but I will definately buy me a Mac (99% iMac). I would be really glad if somebody could tell me abot the perfomance of the iMac on FSX. Thanks;)

I run vista64 on my iMac 2.4 and FSX runs beautifully. I started with winXP and gave up. Tried vista 64 and the frame rate went thru the roof. But then again, I knew it would do that since I was a pc user only months ago and discovered the same thing.

Oh and there is a host of tweak websites for FSX and I highly recommend you just make a copy of your fsx.cfg file for backup and start adjusting the settings. Alot can be gained from tweaking.

I know a lot of the comments in this thread are old (But hey, I didnt bump it so :p), but keep this in mind:
Not only does 32-bit limit your ram, the 32-bit XP also limits the amount of processors as well (Not sure if 32-bit Vista does the same). So that contributes the the great increase you see in performance.

On my MacPro XP pro sees all 8 cores. but I only have 2Gb rm available. I hve checked my rm usage when running FSX and it will only use about 1 GB. So If I go to Vista 64 will FSX use any more ram? Can someone with Vista confirm this.

Yes Dimme, Vista 64 will se all your RAM, But get SP1 of Vista, it fixe some bugs, thats will Run FSX better. I have Vista Ultimate, but any vista 64 will see all your memory.

Thanks for the info. I wounder if FSX will use that extra ram? Right now with XP it only uses 1 gb so I not running low on memory. Vista is a big investment is it worth the return. I only use windows for FSX.

The single biggest investment for FSX I got was swapping from XP32 to Vista 64 Pro. I cannot tell you the improvement, it felt like a hardware upgrade!

FSX as it was meant to be.

Just upgraded to Vista 64 and WOW. Great frame rates no problems and wow what a sim. I had this sim for 1.5 years and tried it on many different boxes and now What a difference Vista made!

Awesome!!! I'm wondering though, when I get ready to buy Vista to play FSX on my iMac, will the 64bit take up all of my 2GB of RAM. I plan on upgrading to 4GB when I get the cash, but until then, should I wait or go ahead and buy the 64bit Vista, install it, and install FSX. As of right now, I don't own a copy of Vista or XP, so when I go to buy one, I'd like it to be a one shop deal. Any ideas on this issue?? Thanks!!

I don't think Vista 64 is officially supported on the iMac but if you have 4 gigs of ram it will see it. I went with the OEM version and saved a few $$$.

Sorry to raise a dead thread. I have a MP 2.8 Octo 4GB Ram 8800GT. I am tearing my hair out trying to get rid of stutters in FSX. I've got it installed on XP32 and Vista 64 - should I concentrate on Vista and run the tweaks dimme suggested.

I really need help!!
