Seems decent enough for $4.99
It looks like a 16-bit RPG. I've never played the oringal, but it looks like a slightly less detailed shining Force. A single tap will move the guy to where you've touched. A double tap will make the guy in that direction.

It has it's own ingame menu for using items, saving, volume etc

The fight screens have "new" graphics (can be switched back on the settings menu). You select the command and touch the appropriate enemy.

It has it's own settings under the iPhone Settings icon, you can switch off Audio, change character names and turn on Hard mode

Everything is in Comic Sans!

As someone who played the original Sega-CD version to death (and considering getting an itouch - this may help clinch it) how's the dubbing? Music? Script?

I've seen screens of the re-worked battle backgrounds and sprites but not a lot with those things.

I'd also be curious to see that youtube video mentioned.

Does this game have random battles (i.e., you're walking around the map and all of the sudden you're in a battle you couldn't avoid/predict)?

Lucca, I'm not too far into the game (just hit What'sitcalled Cave to find Otto) but the English translation isn't too bad at all - though I'm not familiar with the original Sega CD version. There are a few typos (eg. the castle "was under attacked!" instead of "under attack") but nothing too bad. I assume the original script was re-translated since 1994. There have been more than a few instances where the script seems to conspicuously reflect events since 2001: the attacking army is referred to as "terrorists," and one character is on the lookout for people of Danek origin, even though it's "profiling". Just kinda funny.

Great game so far for $5. I'd been waiting for an RPG for the iPhone, and I thought I'd have to wait longer than a few days. The auto-save when you hit the Home button is terrific. I didn't know about the Settings menu, I'll have to check it out.

Bumping this just for those that haven't seen it in the store.

Only played enough to find Otto in the cave. So far battles are super easy, but I expect them to get harder later. You level up surprisingly quick in that first cave, so it's worth doing those initial easy fights.

One thing I wish it had was a better indication you are going into battle. Right now, there isn't even a sound or a flash, just switches you to battle mode. Sometimes when I unexpectedly cause my character to stop, I pause, thinking it was about to go into battle.

Besides the menu being plain iPhone interface, and a lot of hitting back buttons, the rest of the app has a nice slick iPhone presentation.

Another one not available in the UK.

Why don't developer want their games and apps played outside of the US - it is crazy them giving up a market for no reason.

It's quite an old game so in this case I can imagine the publishing rights for us to be held by a different party. Or it's possible that they need to localise it.

What is even MORE annoying is that you cannot find this app listed anywhere unless you do the "all iphone applications" thing and page through 38 pages of apps (or know it exists and search by name).

Using the Browse link in the upper right corner of the app store in iTunes gives you text lists based on categories, but it does not show up there either!!! But if I search for it by name I can get it. I feel bad for the developer, almost no one will ever know his game exists unless someone tells them!

Surely in this case you could just look through the games section?
I do agree in general though.
