Definetly not. I have a Three phone but have never used the 3G features. The only reason we have three is because it costs us (me and my hubby) nothing to call each other. We were first on three and our mobile bills are literally a few dollars, sometimes nothing.

But seeing what the iphone does and availability of wireless hotspots in Sydney makes this a non issue-who needs video calling anyway

The other 3g+iPhone concern is the power usage, and the iPhone's battery is bad enough right now..

Hmmm, most reviewers have mentioned that the iPhone's battery life comes close to or surpasses the claims made by Apple so I don't know how valid that statement really is.

That being said however, in Malaysia there are only 3 mobile phone telco's and out of the 3, 2 have 3G services. The one i'm on right now only has EDGE but frankly speaking I can live with it. I can load a page as fast as or even faster than friends who use the 3G service so right now, I say 3G sucks... In Malaysia at least:mad:

Btw, some people call HSPDA as 3.5G :p

Um...it's mixed*. And personally mine's really bizarre, it'll last one day without the battery budging, and the next day it'll be nearly dead, even after being charged fully. And I'd be using the iPod feature, watching a tv show, making a few calls and idling on IRC while checking mail and reading a few sites, every day.

Yeah I do agree that electronic devices are a bit fiddly when it comes to battery life. Did you calibrate the battery first btw?

i played with it so much that that's pretty obvious :p

I don't know why there's such a huge difference in battery life, given that usage patterns were pretty identical the entire time.

After the teardown pics came out it was apparent there is some space in the design to fit something else, ie a 3G chip or similar hardware.

I'm still hoping on a r2 iPhone hitting the UK at launch with 3G enabled.

3G is hardly a dealbreaker for me; the iPhone's just too shiny to resist. I'm currently living with a Nokia E61 which lacks 3G and the web's fine. I'm pretty sure I'd use an iPhone in a much similar way to my current Nokia; as in, utilising wifi when I'm at a hotspot and not bothering with GPRS/EDGE. For my uses, 3G is kinda pointless.

Probably how i will end up using it if there aren't decent tariffs and 3G, my uni has a pretty large and wide wifi zone as well as all of the house i am usually in so it is only really while i am driving somewhere which is against the law to use phones anyway.

Although I said 3G isn't a necessity, it's highly possibly that Apple could incorporate it into the current iPhone design. We're seeing more and more ultra-thin (V3xx anyone?) and long battery life (Nokia 6288) 3G mobiles, hence I wouldn't disregard the technology completely.

Meh, we'll see what Apple decides to do in a few months.

Did the phone actually die, or are you just talking about the battery level indicator?

I've found my iPods' indicators were hopelessly inaccurate. When you turn on the device after charging, it'd be empty. As you leave it on, it goes up over the course of 5 or 10 minutes, then down again to almost empty, and can be used in the almost empty state for several hours.

If your iPhone didn't actually turn off, could it just be the indicator is similary naff?

that could be a possibility, yes. i know how unreliable the iPod indicators were. I haven't used it to the point that it died (yet), I only know the battery was drained from the indicator, nor do I feel like testing how (un)reliable it is unless I can charge it up quickly..can't live without it :p

With my current phone, I couldn't be bothered about data speed because I really find Internet to be crap on everything that came before the iPhone. With an iPhone, however, no 3G would be a dealbreaker. This phone must have strong data connectivity or it is crippled.

My brother brought his iPhone from New York and, despite the fact that we can't connect to anything, it does seem really nice. A bit big, but I guess the Internet stuff wouldn't be much use if it were smaller. The touch interface and keyboard are really very very good.

If it is true about O2 becoming the operator of the iPhone in the UK. Then we have another problem.

As far as I am aware orange are the only operator in the UK that actually uses EDGE, all the others do not.

So will O2 be implementing EDGE or will we have to suffer with GPRS?!

I will only be using the network for phone calls, sms and emails.

Everything else il use the Wifi. If there are any more developments on the unlocking front il just get one from the US. I don't need 3G and id rather not be locked into a 24 month contract that certainly wont be cheap in the UK.

A pseudo smartphone that is not even able to run Java apps. Useless.

It's not a dealbreaker as I'd mainly use Wi-Fi, but it gives me serious pause for thought.

More serious for me are lack of MMS, inability to use mp3 or aac ringtones (my K750i can use aac files as ringtones), and inability to edit documents on the fly.

It ads up to make me wonder would a pda phone (maybe with gps thrown in) be better for my needs/wants.
