Jeez, I thought the notion of me keeping a laptop for 5 years only got laughs in my household
It’s great so far, obviously it’s really just more of the same compared to the M1 Air it’s replacing - but a lot more.
The screen is my main love point right now, not just that it’s bigger, it’s just a beautiful thing to look at. I recently replaced my OLED TV because of bad burn-in, and looking at this new screen on the MacBook makes me glad Apple didn’t go the OLED route.
There’s no denying the difference the extra power makes though. Yesterday I loaded up Xcode to get some work done, hit compile and did my usual get up to make coffee while it did so. I didn’t even make it out of the room before it finished. This could be disastrous to my coffee intake
I loaded up some 3D models, which even my iMac used to struggle with and the M1 Pro just laughed at them.
Obviously lower intensity tasks barely see a difference, the standard M1 is already excellent. But for more demanding tasks, everything is just so much quicker - he said stating the obvious.
This is without doubt the laptop I’ve been wanting Apple to make for years. I swore blind - and actually stuck to it, that I wouldn’t buy another MacBook Pro as long as they had a TouchBar and no F-keys. And until the M1 MBA, that was always a bit of a problem.
But now it’s as if they built the new MacBook Pro’s just for me. They’ve taken my list and given me the keys back, the ports back, a stunning screen, unbelievable battery life, mind blowing performance, damn near silence even under heavy load.
In fact other than my highly unrealistic request that it does my work for me, there’s really nothing bad I can say about it. I don’t even mind the notch, I actually like that it’s given me just a little extra screen real estate by moving the menu bar out of the normal screen area.
Oh, wait, I can say something negative. Now my Samsung X5 looks positively slow in comparison to the internal SSD of the MacBook Pro.
Right now I’m still under the spell of it’s newness, but with the M1 MBA that didn’t really wear off. It regularly found ways to surprise me and I’ve no doubt this will be the same.
I may even surprise myself and actually manage to keep it for 5 ye… nah, I’m not going to try that one again
But I’m pretty sure I won’t be replacing it next year.
