I’m considering installing the developer beta on my m4 pro for the first time. My primary device is an iPhone but just wondering how risky it is?

So far after a day I’ve had one crash…I would say take a backup and then you can always revert if you have too much instability.

For my iPhone 16 Pro Max it looks like I would wait for the 2nd/3rd betas seeing all the complaints in the iOS26 forum. Given that there are enough changes that positively would affect me from switching I bit the bullet and updated M4 iPad Pro to iPadOS 26 and loving it so far. The only glitch I have is I have multiple lock screens on different focus modes but when I change the lock screen on the main focus mode it crashes; all other focus modes I have no issues. Will submit feedback.

I reported a crash that if you swipe back and forth between Home Screen and App Library a few times rapidly it crashes back to lock screen. Can only reproduce it on a memory-constrained iPhone 13 Mini, but I'm not testing on my flagship devices.

Also noted, Reminders requires a database upgrade which means your synced items will no longer be available on older iOS/iPadOS/macOS versions.

On my M4 iPad Pro, I've had a few crashes so far. Some visual glitches. Every app I've used seems to work fine though. My 14 Pro has had the same issues, along with extra slow down and battery drain.

If you don’t mind some problems and hiccups here and there, I'd say it's fine to install. Just make sure to make a back up first.

I am very vocal about not liking some of the UI choices Apple has made in Tahoe, but for actual work? I’ve been using it since installing on Monday night, and haven’t had a single crash, performance glitch, or thing not working since, and have been beavering away in my MS Office apps in that time.

It seems stable-but-ugly.

Actually no crashes on my M4 11inch yet, besides sometimes being a little jittery between pages its a real smooth experience so far for me.

It's a developer beta; released for developers, not to play with the OS, but to play with their software development, within the OS, to ensure compatibility, and function. If that's not you, you have to accept its faults, that's just the way it is. These forums are full of(at this time of the year) with moans, whinges, and generalised dissatisfaction, with something that most of them, would be better off avoiding, until the Public Beta comes along. Hence why Apple has created a division in it's releases, between public and developers betas.
Although why Apple has allowed anyone, other than a paid developer to be able to download these betas through system settings, is beyond me. All it creates is negativity and a poor brand image.

The cynic in me is saying that the reason it’s gone out in this state is they ran out of time in UX/UI testing before WWDC, and they’re hoping the community will find and raise all the issues. They clearly (hahahaha omg) need more real user data on Liquid Glass and its implementation.

On that note, everyone complaining about Tahoe should be making maximum use of Feedback Assistant.

Sure, if you raise an issue it might not get fixed, but if you don’t raise an issue, it definitely won’t get fixed.

So, for now I'm trying it on 2 iPads and 1 iPhone test. I'd say the battery holds up, but I notice some bugs, which is fine since it's the first beta.If you really want to try it, download the IOS 18.5 restore so you can go back.

I'd say 95% of the bugs I've experienced have been something visual and did not really impact my ability to use my phone.

Sounds like most of you are seeing small bugs but no total deal breakers. Would you say it’s OK for light daily use on an M4 Pro?

No major bugs. In Safari the bookmarks bar under the address bar doesn’t work unless you have multiple tabs open. I’m sure it worked initially but no longer does.

I'm using it for full daily use. I live life on the edge!!!11
(If my phone happens to stop working honestly maybe that's a good thing for a while... I can "touch grass" and so forth).

I’ve been using it since Monday evening on a 12.9” 5th generation iPad Pro and have been pleasantly surprised. No crashes, just some minor UI bugs.

iPad Pro 12.9-inch (5th generation)

it seems to reboot everytime i power up the Mac. I have a MacMini with an M1. it's not really a problem but i have noticed it. it's odd though, everytime it reboots at startup the system seems to be more stable. maybe just my imagination, i'm not sure.

that's interesting - and useful to know because i do use facetime! how long did it take for you to downgrade?

The downgrade itself is quick: I put it in recovery mode, connected it to the Mac and it took maybe a half hour in total.

Then restoring the backup was quite a long process, maybe around 2 hours, as my backup is quite big. But I just let it sit there and do its thing, everything was perfect afterwards. So pretty seamless really.
