SBSettings now is even more valuable to quickly turn off all the power draining stuff. Sucks for you non-jb ppl

Of course, but there's also problems with just the phone sitting idle or charging.

Have to say with mine overnight on standby it stayed the same the whole time .. was 95% when i went to bed and 95% when i got up ... have location on the whole time and bluetooth .. no push tho and no 3G ... also on wi-fi as i'm in my home :)

the battery life is definitely better on the 3GS ... I switched from the 3G and it is hugely better (and had the 3.0 on the 3G) ..

hope this helps and that you're able to sort it out ..

Mine with wifi and Exchange push is 94% with 9.3 hours of standby and 13 minutes of activity. That's not bad, but my 2G would typically still registry a full battery icon while this one is down a tick. So, I wouldn't call it better for me.

I'm doing a test today.

Completely drained my battery last night.
Fully charged over night.
Unplugged my phone at 7:30am
I will be listening to music for about ~8hours today.
Wifi on, 3G on, Location services on, Bluetooth off. Push on.

Let's see what happens.

edit: it will be on my pocket all day, i believe heat contributes to the battery draining faster?

I too have been perceiving some reduced battery performance on my 3GS. Got it Sunday and it just seems that it was getting lower faster. I typically had most services on (wi-fi, Bluetooth, 3G, Notifications, and sometimes Location Services). But, I quickly turned off location services since I rarely use it at this point.

So, as a test, I charged my phone fully overnight Tuesday to Wednesday. Turned OFF 3G, Bluetooth and Notifications (Location had already been off for awhile. Then took it of the charger at 7:30 AM EST. It is now over 26 hours later and I have 54% battery left with no charging since I removed it yesterday (Wednesday). Wi-fi is on and actively used. I have used it for multiple short phone calls, quite a bit of web browsing, watched a short video I had shot, used Stanza for 30 minutes, manually checked email multiple times, about 10 texts, 2 games of checkers, several sessions with the game Paper Toss, checking Facebook quite a bit, checked weatherbug, used the alarm clock to wake up today, 3 reboots, 30 minutes of playing music via the iPod app, app store checks, etc..... In essence a normal usage day - without watching heavy videos which I sometimes do.

So, I am obviously seeing something here. My usage (except for less video) was very normal for me. I use the iPhone a lot. Between shutting off 3G, Bluetooth and Notifications - the battery performance now seems to be spectacular.

I am going to let this thing go all day today to see how far I get. I will charge overnight tonight and add 3G back in. I want to test services one at a time to see what the worst offender is and what I can live without. I am hoping the issue is Notifications, which is not a huge deal for me. Would be nice, but not worth horrible performance. I'll post something more when I get more results.

3g

When I went to 2G, turning off the 3G services, and using wifi mostly in the home and office,

I got 36 hours down the road, and nearly seven hours of usage.

This could end up being my issue also. But, I had 3G on all the time with my regular 3G phone and did not see this type of performance problem. I work out of my home, so I have the ability to just use wi-fi most of the time. So, turning off 3G is really not that big of a deal for me. If that is the problem in the end - I will keep it off and just enable when I really need it. I am assuming that the Notification service is a big culprit also. I believe Apple said that Notification was about a 21% hit during their testing. That is quite a bit. So, we will see what happens.

Settings Profiles - Great Idea!

WiFi on 24/7
3G on 24/7
Location Services on 24/7

The only one I toggle is Bluetooth, because I can go a few days without using my headset. Four e-mail accounts set to fetch every 15 minutes.

I am constantly on my iPhone. It's a sickness.

I have no battery issues.

Oh, I forgot to say that profiles is a good idea. :)

Edit: I do have screen brightness at about 35-40%, with auto brightness enabled. I'm sure that helps.

Wow! I have to power off anything I don't need to preserve battery life throughout one day... disappointing.

I too was thinking how convenient it woud be to have one app (of course, I searched the App Store to no avail) with profiles that you can configure and by merely tapping on the app button you can cycle through the active profile you need at any given time. Developers, there's money to be made here! :D

How to turn off 3G/Push?

Ho do you turn off the Push function, and switch from 3G to 2G, and the other power-saving features? I can't find these options in the settings.

There are so many battery threads out there, I've pretty much picked this one at random to post my experience.

After getting my 3GS on Saturday I had been experiencing the rubbish battery life issues of others. I'd take my phone to work do and do very little with it minus the odd text, email and browsing, get home and it'd be down to 30-40%. I read some advice on here that suggested these steps:

- Charge iPhone right down to zero.
- Leave for five hours on zero charge.
- Plug into mains charger and charge to 100%
- Leave at 100% for 2 hours before using it (leaving it plugged in and using it is fine as it is not actually using the battery).

I was skeptical due to all the conflicting stories about how to best look after the iPhone battery, but tried it last night anyway. Today the battery has been vastly improved. My iPhone has had wifi/3G/locations services/push switched on all day at work from 8.30am to 6.30pm and the battery was only down to 70% by the end. This included about 1hrs worth of music listening too (in fact, after listening to music for 30mins on the way to work the battery was still 100% when I got there!).

It may not work for everyone, but its worth a try.

Hi Fleudumal

Any thoughts a couple days down the road? Does your battery still have the gained improvement?

Nicolas
