Yet it's very obvious that leaving Facebook open uses a ton more battery than closing it.
Last year an Apple Genius told my dad to get rid of the Facebook app because it uses up battery in the background. He went to the Apple Store to diagnose his battery issues.

I do it cuz i dont trust badly coded apps to actually close. Fb, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter comes to mind.

There should be an indicator like on the Mac dock to show what is actually still running
Please forgive my ignorance, as I do not use Facebook app. Couldn't you just go into settings, scroll to the bottom to find the FaceBook app:
  1. Change Location to While Using
  2. Turn Notifications Off
  3. Background App Refresh Off
Wouldn't this stop the app from eating up battery, at the same time allowing granularity to control its behavior more than just force closing it?

Something like that can and offen does do the trick. Not always though as sometimes for some Facebook can still do something in the background for some reason, but in many instances it will be fine.

I heard a while back that fb is „cheating“ and can run the app in the background by pretending its a voip app. There was also times where the app would keep running in the background by playing silent audio
