I see it becoming a bit like Touch ID, nobody had a proper competitor to it until a year and a half after. Let's see if Huawei do it right.

Personally I need to read up and understand it better. I thought we already had a lot of this functionality already.

That's "Long Press" if I'm not mistaken, which is software only.

This is an actual Touch sensitive panel that can be depressed to various pressure levels in conjunction with software.

You know, after using my apple watch for a couple of months, not sure I want force touch, sometimes I'm not pressing hard enough and have to let go and press down again, I think a long press is more intuitive. On a touchpad though, the force touch makes a lot more sense.

Ok I'm sorry but this is pathetic. Could they not come up with their own marketing terminology for this? As far as I know "force touch" is not some industry standard term, it's a marketing term Apple came up with. And these Chinese companies wonder why people accuse them of copying?

Have to agree with you on this one. At least use your own tech term. But then again.......in a couple years after millions of iphones have been sold with force touch.....it will become an industry wide term for the technology.

And just to be crystal clear, I'm not talking about the technology, just the terminology. This is the headline on The Verge right now: Huawei brings Force Touch to its phones before Apple. Sorry Verge "force touch" is not some industry standard term ala "multi touch". It's an Apple specific marketing term. And since Apple hasn't announced new iPhones yet we don't even know exactly what "force touch" on the iPhone will actually be/do.

isnt it "Incredible Touch"/"Force Sense"? wasnt it only Engadget and iVerge which uses a term forceTouch?

Hmm not sure I can see this 'force touch' idea taking off? Guess we will have to see, Apple don't have much choice as they can't make long press in iOS, maybe they'll get sued by Google if they do? Not that it's ever stopped them..

Anyway, I remember this tech being talked about YEARS ago along with force feedback, but as we have had capacitive touchscreens for so long I'm not convinced by the tech in a phone anymore.

You know, the more I think about it, I think as long as force touch doesn't replace long press, than it can be used as a way of using more obscure features. Something like say bringing up multi window by use of long press, while still keeping long press to select or highlight. Also, practicing on my phone, it seems it would be easier to do with my thumb than having to poke my watch with my index finger. I just hope they allow you to turn it off, my father always presses pretty hard on the touchscreen, it would really throw him off is suddenly that changed things.

Looks like it. But what the heck is iVerge? Outside of reviews The Verge is about as anti Apple as they come. They only put Apple in their headlines as clickbait.

What if from the very beginning all phones had 'force touch'. Then, ten years later (whatever the time frame is) someone gets a bright idea and says, "how about a simple 'long press' instead"?

Everyone would be saying, "Geez, that makes so much sense! I like that better."

This is apple putting another label on something (retina display) to give it a more marketable and personal feel to technology, something they love to do.

Force touch is a gimmick. It's easier to long press and select from a menu than trying to gauge the right amount of pressure to apply. Tried it on the rMB and hated it. Plus, 'force' and 'touch' are contradicting like 'brute force' and 'technique'.
