That's a unique way to photograph the memorial. It's such a big place I've struggled to shoot it. I like this a lot. It may be the lines throwing me off but it seems rotated to the left just a bit. Not sure. I like the ghosting of the people in the frame as well. It's a neat concept. It would be pretty cool if it was a single person in uniform ghosted like that.

I like the lines in the pavement leading to the monument. However, the monument itself leads the eye right out of the frame. Do you have a shot without the point of the obelisk cropped like that?

Definitely! Great idea. Still a very nice photo, JohnMC. I remember having seen it before, and I still like it.

John,

Your photo elicited a "wow" response from me...very well exposed and oozing creativity. I agree with JDDavis in that your verticals are off, however, in looking at each pillar you can see that the sixth or seventh pillar in from Florida is vertical while the others have a degree of slant. Lens distortion? I would be interested (from you or anyone else on this board) in how to correct for this (if such a correction needs to be made). Perhaps members that shoot a good amount of architecture (Phrasiklia, Doylem) could weigh in on this? Don't let my ramblings detract from what I consider to be a very beautifully captured and successful photograph.

Yes, I agree. The verticals at the right are leaning, and in this case it's not helping the image. I'm now using a tilt-shift lens when I want to avoid the effect, but it can be corrected in Photoshop too. If you only need to fix one side, then just use Edit-->Transform-->Distort, and pull out that one corner. Otherwise, use the "Lens Correction" filter, which will correct both sides at once, either horizontally, vertically, or both.

For what it's worth, when I first got my tilt-shift lens, I pitted it against a wide-angle lens + Photoshop. I found that I could pretty well duplicate the effects of the TS lens with software corrections, getting more or less identical shots either way. However, it's a lot easier to compose shots with the TS (since it obviates the need for transforming and cropping in post), and of course with the TS lens there is a lot less fussing around in Photoshop to do.

This is a pretty old one and not that great IQ but I thought of it when I saw the topic. These are the Sutter Buttes near Yuba City, CA. Known as the "smallest mountain range in the world". Not sure if that's true.

This has a lot of potential that is lost because it is too bright. The flow of people down the street are lost to the viewer as a visual element. I tweeked the white point and brightness in PhotoShop. What do you think? I could do better if I had the RAW file.

Phrasikliea correctly identified it as the group of columns on the right side of the picture. Isolate those and look at them and you should pick up the lean. This is the lens distortion I'd mentioned that Phrasikliea elaborated on with her explanation of the tilt shift lens she uses.

From our vacation 2 weeks ago, a few boardwalk shots I took early while my family still sleeping.
Basically focus (I tried 1/3 into the shot via autofocus, then moved to manual so it would not re-focus), put camera on 2 second timer, lay on boardwalk and hold steady f14 & 1/6 sec 1st shot, f22 & 1/3 sec 2nd shot, ISO 100 all.

I grew up in Philadelphia and we spent time down the shore every summer. It was usually Atlantic City. Since the casinos, however, Ocean City is much nicer. I was there a year and a half ago. It was in March and raining. The boardwalk was closed except for one fudge place. It was great anyway.

Thee images are a bit flat for my taste. It was early and the beach area is very flat at that time but I think you could bring out the colors a bit more. Other than that, you have really captured the feel of the place. I can almost smell the salt in the air.

I think the first one you posted of Nisqually is better. The people on the walking path make it more interesting and so does the longer view. This one seems a little cluttered.
