Just wanted to share my experience purchasing an iPad 2017 128gb Wifi model.

Ordered one click and collect, upon opening at home there was one piece of visible dust under the screen.

Second one opened back at store had two dust pieces in different places - very noticeable.

Third one had a hairline scratch on the screen, fourth one ok.

Feel rather underwhelmed after that purchase experience today though hope I can move on and love the device now.

I'm by no means a OCD nut job and all of this was spotted with the naked eye, no magnifying glass to see.

Make sure you check them folks.

I think you made some good observations. And there was a similar thread yesterday on this, which is listed below. Glad you found a good one.

I just recently picked up a Pro.

Unfortunately, the color temp & brightness uniformity is so bad I can see a dim yellow "q" and a bright white "p" on the keyboard. :(

I have also recently tried an Air 2 & a 2017 in the past couple weeks so I'll be on my 4th soon. The good news is that I have got better each time with regard to organizing my icons into folders!

I lucked out and got a good one on the first try. Ordered it from B&H. Glad it didn't have any issues because I don't know what B&H's return/exchange policies are these days. In the end, it was worth not having to pay sales tax. Glad you finally got a good one.

I have been through ~ 12 iPads (iPad Pros and the 2017 iPad) over the past few months, all with one screen issue or another. From dust, to dead pixels, to discoloration, to dark patches, you name it. Still have not gotten a good one. Latest purchase were two 2017 iPads, both with lots of dust under the glass. Returned both. Will wait a while before trying again. Disgusted at Apple's screen quality lately. Have had similar problems with iPhones.

That really is not good enough for the prices we are paying for Apple products.

I can understand a dead pixel or light bleed with an iPad, but when you start factoring in hair and dust under the display, those are factory conditions that could be remedied and combated with better practices. Now, I understand dust is everywhere and it's unavoidable, but it still can be somewhat controlled in a more suitable, clean environment, especially when you consider Apple's stringent quality standards.

Really? I thinks this is more a case of looking for defects

But what does it matter, that forum member obviously found dark patches, light bleed, dead pixels, other defects that clearly was obvious to him versus what others may or may not have found . The end result is you pay a premium for these devices and you have expectations. Apple never intended to manufacture a $600 iPad with dead pixels and light bleed. I don't find it acceptable either for what you pay for. I understand nothing is perfect, but some of those manufacturing defects doesn't take a microscope to look for.

The 2017 ipad is 329 bucks and is cheaper than many. I believe people abuse apples generous return policies. No other brand allows you to do this and people know this and therefore abuse it. I'm sure my iPad isn't perfect but I'm not looking for minor specks of dust

I will say Apple does make exceptions more than other retailers and Big box stores, and perhaps some do take advantage of Apple's generosity for returns. But even if that was the case, someone still has 14 days to return a product regardless if there's a defect or not, because that's within their policy and procedure. And after that, then they're looking at a warranty device or repair if there's an issue noted.

And in today's consumer world of electronics and products, there's not much retailers can do within denying someone within the 14 day return period for a product that may or may not be defective.

I'm not looking for dust particles either in my iPad, but I don't think it's acceptable to find dead pixels, light bleed and dark spots. Those defects doesn't take someone to be specifically looking for something to locate those types of issues.

Good for you, but why would I not check my device for issues when I get it? I think it's foolish not to. All I do is carefully look with my naked eye. It's not like I'm using a magnifying glass. Each time this happens I show my family, who are not into tech whatsoever, and even they see the issues immediately. If I get the product I expect and pay for, I wouldn't be returning.

I don't think it's a generous return policy at all. I think Apple are one of the few companies who look after their customers and this is what breeds loyalty.

I know if I buy an apple product and there is something wrong they will fix it or replace it.

There are a plethora of tablets you can buy for less than £340. Will I buy them? No because I am willing to pay extra for Apple customer support. And the knowledge that I can should o have an issue, have this sorted with minimal fuss. Were it not for that I could pay
Less than half the price for a tablet with similar spec.

So it's not generous at all. It's doing the decent thing and showing your customers that you value them.

So you agree with his sentiments but you wanted to take the time to argue his semantics for a bit? This place gets nuttier every day.

I'm curious if buyers are seeing more of these perceived quality control problems (dust, dead pixels, spots, etc) on the new 2017 cheap IPad vs the IPad Pro. From what I've seen here, I believe the problem might be worse in the cheaper new IPad. Could the dust issues reported be related to the non-laminated screen I've seen discussed? or is this simply a cost related issue in that the cheaper ones don't under go the same quality control as the ones that cost considerably more?

No. I don't agree. He said it's a generous return policy and people abuse it.

I don't think it's generous and I don't think wanting a product free of defects of 'abusing' it.

I'll be buying a new iPad in the next few weeks. If there's noticeable dust under the screen or scratches right of the box I won't be happy and will return it for a replacement. I don't see that as abuse. I see that as being happy with a product I've just paid for.

That said I've had iPhones since the 3G and several iPads and iPods no never once had a single issue. They've all been as expected out the box. I don't foresee this purchase being any different. But I do like knowing that if by chance there is a defect Apple will rectify it.

There is dust because there is an air gap in the screen layers (not laminated with glue).

I've never bought an iPad that didn't have some sort of defect or blemish. My current 9.7 pro is both bent and came with major scratches around the cellular antenna. They actually told me it was supposed to be a little bent....

I've always been quick to defend Apple but maybe this is proof the naysayers have a point. Let's hope they get out ahead of it.

I don't think anyone here is "Naysaying" against Apple. I think you're finding out that these are Apple loyalists who are purchasing these products that are finding these issues.

But then again you have to remember, this is the forum intended for discussion and finding a solution to a problem. So naturally, someone will report their concerns or issues they located with the product on here. It's Not really meant to be negative against Apple intentionally, just sharing their experiences rather that be good or bad.

I tried two iPad Air 2 and two iPad pro 9,7" in order to replace my iPad 3. I was very disappointed about the quality of the screens of these devices. Now i bought an iPad 2017 128GB wifi and everything seems to be ok.
Ok, the iPad 2017 cannot be compared to the pro, but concerning build quality there is no compromise in this device.

I think when one shells out hundreds of dollars for a premium product they have the right to be satisfied with it. I guess I have been lucky with my purchases or I just don't notice them as I put my iPad in an otterbox case as soon as I get them which hide any blemishes or imperfections.

One's "right to satisfaction," while not difficult to understand, varies too greatly from customer to customer. This board has shown over and again that there can exist a gargantuan disparity between two different peoples' satisfaction with a single product.
