Since a lot of good ones have been mentioned already I'll give the casual CoD: Modern Warfare comment, think it was 4(?).

Campaign was pretty exciting (well general 'story' aside ;)) back then - the newer ones all borough from that, so if you haven't played these I'd recommend MW.

The Return to Castle Wolfenstein is supposed to be pretty solid, may give it a look, despite its age, if you haven't already.

+1. Wolfenstein 3D, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Wolfenstein (III) are all solid games. Wolfenstein 3D looks very dated now, it was the first commercially popular FPS.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein I recall playing on the PS2 sometime back.

I found Wolfenstein 2009 is that the same as Wolfenstein (III) ?

Wolfenstien 2009 looks good.

i played and liked a lot the first and eventually the second, not sure. :D heard good things about the 4th so will check that out later on. i'm mostly playing cod:aw and alien: isolation nowaday, both pretty awesome in my book.

I remember having a good time with some of the Call of Juarez (1+2) games too. Very entertaining and should be quite cheap now, have a look at those too. fun and some nice mechanics.

Thanks for the Juarez pointer, I think I now have more FPS suggestions than I can play in the next year, but hey keep suggesting everyone :)

Unreal, the solo game, and it's multiplayer (Unreal Tournament predecessor) were both amazing in their day.

For the OP, I assume you never played Marathon? Now dated, but awesome in its day. Me and my computer buds competed in multiplayer combat for about 7 years, before abandoning it for UT. There is an iOS Marathon version available, but I don't like the iPad controls for it.

Most definitely. Unreal had atmosphere and gameplay out the wazoo. And the original UT? I have yet to see another online game match it for style and variety.

Everyone else might've been having a ball with Quake back then, but for me, it was all Unreal, all the time.

UT as far as environments, beat Quake into the ground! :)

Not only that, but it had better weapons, too. I have yet to play an FPS with a gun as fun to use as the Flak Cannon.

...and that multishot rocket launcher. Man, it was great cheesing people with that.

For anyone who is interested, Unreal Tournament 2004 is on sale on Steam 50% off!

For the OP, this is primarily an online game, but it does have a solo you vs bots tournaments-campaign. For $7.49 it might be worth a look. Price through Dec2. :)

In case anyone is interested.

For Windows at GoG

Unreal Gold
Unreal Tournament GoTY
Unreal 2: The Awakening Special Edition
Unreal Tournament 2004 Editors Choice Edition

All for - $7.96

Now now…. don't forget to mention that the (updated) Marathon games are available open-source from a Bungie-run website. And yes, they even updated the graphics (revamped hi-definition textures) a bit so that the open-source games look not-so-outdated.

http://marathon.sourceforge.net

And for the OP: they are free to download. Free, as in you pay nothing.

Thanks for that pointer, Will take a look.

For your purposes, wanting to avoid online multiplayer, they do have an outstanding solo campaign. But even with the updated graphics, the game will appear dated as compared to the Half Life series, not that that makes it unplayable nor unenjoyable, unless you are "retro" adverse. ;)

Your avatar is noted. I loved that game. :D

Not to brag, but at one point, I was so good at UT2004, I'd play people in Capture the Flag 4 to 1, and win.

Like all the time. I was smoooovvveee.

You braggart! :p I'm trying to figure out if I want to try to configure my router and firewall to host games with friend. Has anyone done that? hard?

Were you like 16 years old in those days? ;)

My 15-year old nephew, who's into Call of Duty games, will slaughter me in any twitch action FPS games. I'm more than double his age, so I'm at a disadvantage.

Not bragging at all, sir. I'm merely humbly stating that I was goooooood, and I could tear just about anyone up bigger than ten of 'em. :p

The hardest thing about setting up your router to host is finding out where your manufacturer decided to hide port forwarding in their software, and/or what they decided to call it. Like they call it virtual servers on mine for some weird reason.

Once you figure that out, it's pretty straightfoward. Get the network IP address for the computer you want to host on (usually something like 192.168.1.5 or so), enter the port you need to open both in Internal and External ports (sometimes called inbound and private depending on the brand), set it to TCP protocol, check the enable box, then hit apply. Do it for each port you need to open. Once you do it once, you'll get the jist of it.

Nope. 24. Still good, even though I was an old man by online FPS standards. :p

I reinstalled Directx to what online said was the latest version, did the same with AMD Catalyst, I then re installed Wolfenstein: The New Order but did not allow it to install DirectX. After an hour I clicked on the icon and it fired up, now that's an FPS, had great time with it so far, I'm like little kid let loose in a sweety shop :)

Thanks for this description. Now I just have to get the energy and courage to proceed. ;)

System Shock 2 should be worth a look. I bought it a while ago but I have not played it yet. I think on Steam, its the one with updated graphics but still dated compared to today. I think there is a Mac port.

Just bought this for $.99 on Steam sale.
