How long have the "Out of the Box" and "Catch of the Week" free downloads been going on? I use the iTunes free songs iMix and never saw them. (Then again, that iMix also missed the Vol. 2 Mixtape.) Are those new for the first time this week? Seems like they will be weekly now.

BTW, that Girlfight link doesn't work. But search for Girlfight in iTunes and you'll quickly see the free song.

Ah oops - I hit return half way through the URL. That's the first time I've seen both of them.

Regarding #17

17. Mon Jan 17: Various Artists - Street Official Mixtape, Vol. 3 - Hip Hop/Rap [Home page or Genre=Hip Hop/Rap page]
This selection was supposed to be available 1/11/05. I kept getting "not available at this time" messages until the next morning. I downloaded it 1/12/05 along with the Discovery Tune "Disappear." It was available before 1/17/05 as quoted from above.
Just thought you might want to know, for accuracy sake.

Thanks, RedRaven. I fixed it to show the proper date that #17 appeared. I'm not sure how useful the dates are, or even who cares about tunes once they are no longer free, but we'll try to keep the history correct for music archeologists of the future.

Whoops

Well, the proper date but not the proper day! Jan 11 was a Tuesday.

:)

Um, er, I meant Jan 11, 1999, which WAS a Monday. No, wait, you won't believe that. OK, I had it right but hackers broke into the forums and changed my post. No, that still won't fool you.

I know! The gravitational pull of Saturn's moon Titan, coinciding with Steve Jobs' reality distortion field during the Macworld keynote, caused Monday to extend past midnight into Tuesday.

that explains it!

Holy-moly! That explains it. I tried to download the Mix that day and kept getting error messages until the following day. It's clearly because Monday had heaved itself into Tuesday and the tune wasn't available until Wednesday which was Tuesday...wow. :eek:

Thanks to a tip from member mward333, I have corrected the categories in the chart in the first post.

And thank you to everyone else who posts when they see discovery downloads I miss or other new types of freebies that show up. I look for the obvious ones each Tuesday, but its really a team effort. If you spot any other free tunes (or audiobooks), please post with the details and tell us how you found them!

Weid. The main freebie link (Ellie Lawson) posted here tells me something about "item not available at the US store at this time." But I can get to it from the store home. The link I dragged from there (which works for me) is:

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/...m?playlistId=41742864&originStoreFront=143441

Anyway, many thanks for the updates, Doctor Q!

Any chance of re-ordering that post with the most recent dates on top, before it gets too long? :)

PS, I hope there will also be an iMix that is good about keeping these things up to date. The one I was using was pretty good, but didn't catch all the free items I found here.

My own link doesn't work for me either (even though we all use dragging or "Copy iTunes Music Store URL" to get the links). But I get error messages when I try your URL too.

That's why I put "[home page]" or "[genre=New Age page]" after the description, to give people another way to get to it. I had hoped that the URLs I capture would work eventually even if they don't work initially, but some of them never seem to work. Giving the URL and the path, if I know it, is all I can offer.

I suppose that would make it more convenient. Maybe I'll switch it as a Valentine's gift to the community in a couple of weeks, when it passes size 30.

The original URL I captured was
playlistId=29164808&selectedItemId=29164813
which didn't work for anybody.

You suggested
playlistId=41742864&originStoreFront=143441
which didn't work for me.

You have now suggested
playlistId=41742864
which led me to try
playlistId=41742864&selectedItemId=29164813
which works for me. I put it in the chart. If it works for you too, we're all set!

Has anybody noticed that the iTMS home page has a rotating choice at the top that says "Queens of the Stone Age Exclusive Pre-Relase Track"? I wonder what the word "relase" means? :rolleyes:

Lucky for Apple, Tiger has a handy feature!

On the U.S. iTunes store this morning, I believe a new section has been added right at the bottom on the right called "Free Songs" which has all the free tracks for that week. I haven't seen it before but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Indeed it has! I noticed that too.

Very cool, and finally!!

EDIT: Anyone else think its a bit odd that such a highly politically polar song is offered for FREE this week? Not that I'm complaining, but it is usually in the interest of a mass-market business to stay as neutral as possible.

The free song last year "Señor Presidente" wasn't terribly neutral either :)

And ever notice that the free tunes are listed on the bottom right of the main iTMS page?
That's new since about a week ago. Very nice of Apple to provide it.

And thanks for the links.

Edit: The main store page doesn't show ALL the free music, such as the Music Sampler, so we still need this thread. And why do they show the wrong genres for samplers!?!?

1-12-05... and 46 songs free already for the year

At this rate we are averaging MORE than one free song per day. Even if you count the multi-song mixtapes (which I never seem to like and may stop "collecting") as only one song each.

I'd better start buying some music before the free stuff takes over my iPod! :eek:
