I like textplus because it uses the same number you already have and it works with regular phones, so no one has to remember a different number to text you.

There's an ad-free version for $3 which i want to buy, but they don't say if it's ad free forever, or if it's a subscription for 1 month or so...

This is not entirely true. You can create an account and validate your mobile number. This way if you have other friends on text plus, they can text your number and it will go through text plus. However, if someone without text plus texts your number, it will come through as a regular text.

Right, that's what I meant, textplus to textplus will work free on iphone and android, and people without smartphones can also text you the regular sms way. But both groups of people still use the same number. In the old versions of textplus, you couldn't create an account, you had to use your phone number. Now they let ipod touches uses words instead of numbers for accounts.

Just as a quick follow-up, I should note that my Gmail filter is as follows for my texts and voicemail for everything from my Google Voice:

Subject: SMS (or 'voicemail')
Skip Inbox
Forward to: username@textfree.com
Delete Message

This way Text Free is simply my notification app for any messages through GV.

How??? I do not see that option...

go into the settings and validate your mobile number. but like i said earlier, this will only allow other text plus users to text your number for free. if someone outside text plus uses your number to text it will come through as a regular text and you will be charged accordingly.
