You forgot to mention that Apple forces you to use THEIR home button. Why can't I use any home button I want?

Actually, no. They can kill a particular app if it turns out to be malicious (i.e. a virus). They can't just "zap" your device, whatever that means exactly.

I thought it was well known that Apple can use its magical and revolutionary powers to send an electromagntic pulse through the AT&T 3G network to fry anyone's devices in any location :p

I don't really get this problem with Apple locking you into what they approve of.

There are over 150,000 apps available on the App store, which between them provide more features and uses for my phone than I could ever have imagined possible 2 years ago. What are people wanting to do that they can't do with any of those 150,000 apps?

Because they have already used the ipad.

and because they have already used all the others (HP Slate, MS Courier) :)

on a different note, i dont mind that ecosystem Apple has put in place. The way i see it as a set of guidelines that Apple has set out for developers to create apps and hold them accountable to the same standards that people demand from Apple.

If only Apple could have or would have released info or for god sakes even held a press conference stating that the iPad would use appstore apps before we purchased it.

I think I found the OP:D

Apparently they don't like any of those 150,000 apps :D

LOL

No free apps - Ah hello? Everything on the app store is either free or a couple of bucks. How cheap is this guy? Does he want app developers to pay him to download their apps?

No installing apps from the web - Well technically the app store is the web, as it is based on transferring apps over the internet. The app store is a way of sorting over 150,000 pieces of software so that developers have a better chance of their audience seeing their products. As we can see from the windows mobile experience, the interwebs have proven to be a very pathetic way of selling mobile software.

No sharing music or books - otherwise known as piracy. This guy has everything going for him, he must be like the most popular guy with the ladies.

We can remotely disable.... OMG the guys in the black coats are after me!!!

Steve Jobs look alike fail.

OP,

Your desire for a more open platform is noted and actually shared by a good number of people. Assuming you would love a tablet device if it were not for the issues you noted, I fail to understand why you will boycott a device and company that will meet your needs because they control how applications are loaded on to the device.

Isn't that cutting off your nose to spite your face? And, why complain on this forum? Why not go out and buy a HP Slate or Android based tablet that will let you do exactly what you want?

This has been demonstrated in the opening sequence to each "Mission Impossible" episode.

Because we all know Apple is the ONLY company that can remove apps if they chose?

MS is taking the exact same approach with WinMo7Series. Source:

From the article...

"Speaking at a MIX10 session about Windows Phone 7 Series architecture this morning, Microsoft's Istvan Cseri mentioned that the Windows Phone Marketplace -- the one and only clearinghouse for apps in WP7S -- will be able to remotely revoke licenses. Since devices will only run properly-licensed apps, this effectively means the company will be able to shut down apps remotely -- a capability they'd probably invoke if a Marketplace app were to badly misbehave en masse, for example. To put it bluntly, Cseri says that apps simply aren't in control of their own life cycle; the user controls installation and removal while the Marketplace ensures that the license is valid."

This thread reminds me of the time I was at the pharmacy and the guy in front of me was bitching to them about how long it took to get his medicine. The pharmacist told him to go to college and start his own pharmacy if he didn't like it.

dude, that's far worse than anything Apple has done. That would mean that Apple would lock down all jail broken phones. Apple isn't stupid. Microsoft is, they lock you out of XBOX Live if you tamper with your XBOX.

+1

Then he could have his meds and eat them too.:p

sorry for the bump.

He meant free-as-in-speech, not free-as-in-beer.

You missed the point (dude) :), my response is to the original title of the thread. I have zero issues with Apple's, or MS's choice to lock down their content. They make money controlling the hardware, software and media, they create it, they should generate profits from it. Zero issues here, simply pointing out Apple is not the only company doing it, or worse.

I would have no problem buying an iPad as I thik that technically, it's quite a cool machine. All I want is the ability to choose where I get my software from.
Unfortunately, you get a lot of issues, I'll name a few:
1) Viruses, malware, other potentially harmful programs
2) Poorly coded programs, and programs that are non-uniform, IE the UI etc... across multiple apps is not uniform, it should be.
3) Fake rubbish apps that don't work

Just to name a few, if Apple didn't have control - it would be chaos.
