I'd had no problems until I enabled spaces.

Once enabled, my screen, without notice would sleep although the machine was still active and when the machine was woken extreme artefacting was usually followed by a kernel panic.

Anyone else enabled spaces?

I had the same issues i think. I disabled Spaces and my machine has been stable for two days.

By saying 'disabled', I suppose you switched it off. Does you actually use Spaces while it was switched on? If you hadn't I don't see how disabling it or enabling it would make a difference.

Yes, I turned it off under system prefs. I don't know if it's related but what I do know is that my unit seems fine now (crosses fingers and toes) No black screens or freeze ups etc.

No, I'm asking you whether you were a frequent user of Spaces while you had the freezes.

Damnit!

So, I was running fine (I had to rollback to iMac 1.0 after the 1.1 screwed me about a month ago) until I installed Leopard and now I have the exact same issues I did with 1.1. I think 1.1 is part of leopard, now I don't know how to get it off. WTF apple?

Can someone help with this?

I notice alot of people with this issue and people saying stuff about Spaces causing the issue. Well let me tell you I started freezing like hell after 1.1 and now with Leopard it just got worse. But the freezing in my particular case was only while playing WoW in full screen (in Tiger). Now in Leopard it's just random freezing but that was only Saturday and Sunday yesterday I played WoW in windowed mode for like 6 hours straight with spaces and windows open on them with no issues, at one point it even went to sleep and came back up with no issues. So I really don't know what's going on I mean its super tempermental.

Friday night right after Leopard upgrade it froze almost instantaneously when I loaded WoW. So I whiped it clean and installed Leopard again and it froze during the screen that asks you to take a picture for your profile during the setup. Then after re-installing WoW it froze within 2 minutes of being in the game in full screen. Then came yesterday nothing at all doing all kinds of stuff too 3 spaces with iPhoto on one, Safari, Mail and Skype on another and Wow on another. I switched back and forth many times and nothing happened. So I really don't know whats up.

The freezes are back this morning with a vengeance.

What I don't understand is how the problem is so random and can stop happening for a few weeks at a time before re-appearing? This makes me wonder how long its going to take Apple to post a fix as its been around for a while already now without any software update and Leopard hasn't done anything to help either.

I bought the first iMac from an Apple store, the day it was released, and I've only had 2 freezes since August 7th.

Apple's 'fix' Software Update 1.2/1.3 is here already, but they aren't fixing anything. Time for you to take this freezer back to Apple.

I'm really getting bummed here. I was at the local Apple store tonight, just to see what was going on, and had a credit card ready for a new iMac. I've been thinking about this purchase for months, and I just couldn't do it, LOL.

Seriously, I have a perfectly fine Powermac sitting on my desk, and I'm wondering if I should hold of on this purchase until a real fix is out there. This is very depressing as, even though the G5 runs great, it is not allowing me to do a number of things I want to, like actually edit AVCHD video from my new cam.

I also don't want to buy a new iMac and NOT install Leopard right of the bat as I want a clean install. I know I could probably run Tiger for a while, but then I either have to "upgrade" or wipe and re-install.

Is there any glimmer of hope in getting a new iMac that will actually run Leopard without these issues? Or is waiting for a fix really the better way?

Sorry to thread jack, just really bummed out as I was ready to come home tonight with a new machine.

Well my 2 week old 2.4 GHz iMac is now running Leopard and I'm still wondering what all these comments about freezing are related to. I'm fortunate in that I have not seen it. Obviously it is a spotty (but real) problem. However, it is not 100% and probably affects a small subset of iMacs.

You are not alone

No freezing here either but I sure feel for those that have the problem, my iMac was nose bleed close to $3k and I would breath fire if it was not $3k perfect. I am sure Mr. Jobs expects what he purchases to perform as advertised as we all have the same expectation.

Do you have Aftermarket RAM?
