He should have his bloody helmet on! The idiot! Hair that colour visible from miles away!

I can't shoot too many with my 200-500 hand held! I get tired! I have on occasion though. VR helps as does a fast shutter.

Mostly (for that lens) I use a monopod.

Monopod? I have one and cannot shoot with it. I cant work out how best to use it so I gave up.

It takes a bit of getting used to.
But with a long lens I find it best.

I don't think I'll be able to do this as I'm looking around for tips & tricks for the camera so naturally its all over but hey, if they release D760 I won't really mind anymore because it will be at least £2000 (based on the trend now) and I paid £1200 so I might lust over new features but I know that I would be crazy to pay that much (or maybe more) for something that I won't notice anyway as my skill is not there yet.

Anyway, initial impression of the D750 coming from D90:

1) its nice and small
2) its super loud - my D90 was quieter but this monster is super loud so that will take some time to get used to
3) layout is similar in many ways to D90 so that was kinda easy but on the other hand it took me ages to find where to change the autofocus as the button was missing - I had to google it :)

4) the ISO and low light seems to be crazy good. I pushed it and was impressed how little light I can get away with and how little noise I get from high ISO. Very impressive

Some things are still a bit confusing so will take me a while to find a way. ie. I set the role of 2nd memory slot as jpeg so i have raw for slot 1 and jpeg copies for slot 2 but it still shoots both raw. Not sure what I overlooked but will find it.

Also, when i get focus I was used to little tiny noise which D750 doesn't seem to have so thats different also.

One thing though, what is the most effective way to check that my lens is working correctly? The reason I ask is that yesterday there was one occasion when the camera struggled to get focus and it took a long time even though it was in the living room with a plenty of light - so that got me thinking that my issue with the D90 + 50mm 1.4G lens could not be only from that combo and maybe, just maybe, there might be an issue with the actual lens. What would be the signs that the lens can have issues?

I also was expecting much sharper results from those 24mp with the prime but I think that i need to improve how i hold the camera also as when i zoom in there is almost always little blur so I think that might be my fault. Even though I was at 1/125 or faster so kinda unsure what is my fault and what is the lens.

Personally, I would prefer that the 50mm lens has some issue so I don't feel like a complete noob but maybe its a combination of few things.

I got really good ebook recently - Secrets To The Nikon Autofocus System - from Steve Perry so I hope to learns tons from it. I think that will be a great start. :)

I'm gonna look for some workshops so if anyone has a suggestion (London) then please let me know. I really wanna grow and enjoy the benefits of this fine machine :D
You have to be using AF-S mode in order to hear the focus confirmation sound. The sound will not work in AF-C mode.

Thank you guys,

slowly going through the process. Today I focused on getting a sharp result of the subject and I think that its still not consistent. Is it possible to have a blur at 1/4000? I would assume that at that shutter speed there will be no blur unless I do super crazy camera move but am I wrong?

So here are examples (ignore the composition - there is none). As you can see I get reasonable focus but she is still not very sharp and when I zoom in on the image it is blurred a bit. There is also another picture that is very blurred which is something I sometimes experience so wonder whats at fault (me, lens, both). I have a tripod in another country but will test it in few weeks time when I get it back. Meanwhile I'm chipping away.
Anyway, what do you think? Does it look like me (even at 1/4000?) or I might need someone else to look at it?

Considering you're shooting wide open on the top 2 and just stopped down a bit on the last , the images don't look bad to my aging eyes . Remember that wide open , or nearly so , you don't have a lot of depth of field to play with . Have you tried shooting stopped down a bit more , say f5.6 and/or f8 and see if that makes things better as regards subject sharpness ?

I would also add that 1) raw files need some sharpening and 2) full sun like this is also hard to get crisp focus.

They don't look bad to me. One thing to keep in mind is that the D750 has a much larger resolution than your D90. This will cause the illusion softness, but if you downsample this file to the resolution of the D90 you will see better sharpness.

Congrats Freida enjoy your new D750

It was challenging for me going from D90 to D750 (layout wise). I was constantly hitting the Menu button instead of the Preview lol. Also, forgetting where the AF changing button was. My D750 is mainly set to AF-C. So to remember where it was located, for a few months I just made a conscious effort to change my AF settings even if I wasn't going to use it on the next shoot. OMG the Shutter is very loud lol. I don't like using the Silent Shutter mode.

So here is a question.

Is this possible straight out of the camera (the amazing sharpness) or is that heavily tweaked in post?

Looking at this guy's portraits I'm just in love with it. He is amazing.

What is good sharpness in RAW and what is blurred? If RAW needs to be tweaked then what is the benchmark to judge it? :)

Thank you all for input, amazing info here

Well, everyone has their opinion as to acceptable levels of sharpness, and it depends on so many factors. I have a different camera than you and no lenses that open to 1.8, so anything I post wouldn't really be a good comparison.

I would keep practicing in better light (not harsh full sun) and see what you get. If you are "guessing" about it being tack sharp, then it probably isn't. You might need to calibrate your lenses, but likely it's just getting used to new gear.

I'm trying to think what did images I got first when I got mine? Yes you can get amazing sharpness out of the box.

When I got mine I didn't have time to tweak it. The following day I took it along to take a few photos at the concert. Without planning my shots I got some really great images. Looking at the LCD screen everything looked great. After uploading them to my Mac, I thought for sure that it was a fluke because I was just dialing any kind of settings just to see what LR would show. To my surprised the images came out great.

I then realized that my usual settings on my D90 will not work the same. I have to now either adjust my Aperture or Shutter. But the images I shot that night were very sharp. I think you will have to play with it and find what works best for you.

side note - fast glass will get you to sharp images. Primes lenses too. :)

Well done freida. No more having to wonder. You just need to keep practicing with the new camera re the soft focus. My first images weren't sharp but single point autofocus definitely helps. And switching on back button focus has made a big difference too

Thank you :)

I'm still not sure what the back button focus is but that chapter is still few pages away so will get there soon :)))

Anyway, I've found out that the 50mm 1.4G lens had back focus issues so its in service now so I look forward to get it back in few weeks so I can start shooting again (as I have no lens at the moment). :(

2mofunk: thank you so much, will check it out :)
