Hrm, I have been shying away from updates for a while; With 10.10.4 released, then a security update, what would happen were I to run the app store update as usual? Black screen, or stock driver support?

I think I'm on 10.10.2 with those Web drivers. MacPro 5,1, GTX650Ti

It's my understanding that Native Apple Drivers support your card, so you should have no issues updating your OS and Web Driver.

Hi everyone. I just replaced my old card with a Nvidia GT-640. Works well, plugged straight in, no extra power cables needed. But my game still crashes if my frame rates drop, and sometimes the whole computer goes down. It's really frustrating as it never happened with my old Windows machine (which is where I got the GT 640 from). I play "Second Life" and use the Phoenix Viewer. I'm told it's not all that hard on a graphics card really, but the moment I go to a populated place (12 or more avatars) my FPS drop to around 5 and I crash. I'm quite happy to buy a new graphics card if it will help, but don't know which one would be best or even if that would help. I've read many posts on Memory Leaks, and CPU bottle-necks..... Don't pretend to understand all of it fully, so here i am asking what you think. My computer stats are given in my signature.

I had the Radeon 7970 3GB. I find my current 2GB GT 640 is noticably faster. The GTX 680 seems not much better. Given as 4 GB, is it true the 2006 architecture can't handle any more than 2GB anyhow? The GTX 680 was amazing on my Windows machine so I know the card is fast. It's the rest of the Mac that is slowing it down somehow. Strangely though, I do find I'm hardly using any CPU power or even a fraction of my Ram. At best whilst in game even during this times of near crashing due to low FPS, I am only 2.2GB of Ram Active with 27.8GB Free, and my CPU usage is only around 11%. Can't work it out.

I disagree, IMO, the most painless and best performing gaming card would be any of the latest Nvidia Cards available from and flashed by MVC.

Lou

They still require web driver in OSX, that's why I won't call them the most painless card. 680 has native support, 100% plug and play.

^^^^Any Nvidia Card works better with the Web Driver.

Lou

But "better" and "required" is different. The Maxwell card without web driver almost not working at all (apart from some simple function by EFI). That's why I didn't say 680 is the best choice, but I just said that's the most painless gaming card.

Could I confirm the status of GK110B cards with 10.9.5 ? With respect to both CUDA and openCL ? I have to downgrade as I need some functionality in Cineform and FCP7 that is lost after 10.10
Thanks!

Yes, cards with GK110B (GTX 780 and Titan Black) should work with OS X 10.9.3 or later with Nvidia web drivers.

Apple Security Update 2016-002 22-Mar-2016 For OS X 10.10.
Hi, Im wondering about the following:

Mac Pro 12 core with GTX 980i, Yosemite (updated except the above mentioned) and Nvidia driver installed.

I have updated the Cuda driver, but I'm not seeing the possibility to update the Geforce Mac Os driver from 346.02.03f05 to 346.02.03f06 in the configuration screen. It says there are no updates.

Will this update only show up after I have done the Os Security update?

Thanks!

Thanks!

Is it better to do the update via the Nvidia configuration screen or can I just download it myself and do the driver installation before the Os update? This because of the black screen issue.

If it's better to use the configuration screen update possibility, I will use screensharing and my macbook pro

I think the best way to do it would be to install the beta Nvidia web drivers, if you can. This will allow you to see after updating OS X and then you can upgrade to the non-beta Nvidia web drivers.

Houston,
we have a problem:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/cmp-not-waking-up.1957808/
I have mp3,1 + ati5770 + gtx760 (+3-4 monitors).
So, I believe os hangs when waking up, because somekind of problem in drivers.
This is a bit problematic, since I'd like to connect to mp "from the field" and used countless hours to fiddling up W-on-W.

When I set this mp up, I couldn't use dedicated drivers for gpus, since eg. nvidia's "web drivers" stop ati from working.
Is it still the same?

Anybody have similiar problems with 10.10.5 & "apple's" nvidia drivers?

Is the only way to get rid of the problem, to throw away 5770 (and boot screen) and survive just with 2 monitors...?

Would 10.11 help? (I'm not sure how many apps it will obsolete...)

Flashing the cards (neither is now flashed to mac...)?

Sell the 5770 & the GTX760 & buy a used GTX680 & flash it yourself. This will give you an Apple boot screen & supports 4 monitors. It will be cooler & quieter too.

Why older 680 (195W tdp) is better than newer 760 (170W tdp)?
Can my 760 be flashed and does it disable any ports?
I have this: https://www.msi.com/Graphics-card/N760-2GD5OC-ITX.html#hero-overview
I'm using dvi & hdmi to 30" & 23" and vga from 5770 to 21" crt (8,32M pixels).
What 680 can do this?

GTX 680s are often recommended because:

1. They fit within the power requirements of the Mac Pro.
2. They offer reasonably well performance.
3. There exists freely available firmware that you can download and flash yourself to get boot screens on Macs.

Your GTX 760 can be flashed but the firmware is not free and you must send it off to get it flashed unless you manage to write your own Mac compatible firmware for it.

Freely available meaning property of Apple/nVIDIA and not freely meaning property of MacVidCards?

If the cards have only one dvi and I'm using that with vga-adapter, does using hdmi port need some expensive hdmi2dualportdvi-adapter? EDIT: maybe dp->dual-link-dvi would be easier?

Something like over 5 years ago you couldn't use nvidia & amd in the same MP. Then it changed, but I assume that my problem is the same again. Would it be okay with 10.10/10.11 to use both nvidia & amd if both have "official" efi?

Freely available as in you can find it online and download.

Sorry, I don't know the answer to this question. It has been a long time since I've used more than one monitor.

Cooler & quieter than a 760 plus a 5770. Plus it can be flashed for free without paying the MVC tax:) A 680 has 2 x dual-link DVI plus DisplayPort plus HDMI. All you would need is DVI to VGA adaptor. The point is that you don't need two graphics cards to hook up 4 monitors.

The performance of the 680 is a bit higher too. http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-760-vs-GeForce-GTX-680
