Did you make the recovery disk from the same computer? If so it already has a recovery partition. Now you have 2. Maybe it's confused.

yea i did.

On a wireless keyboard there is a trick/rhythm to do it. My trick is as follows.
Press "alt or command-r or cmd-r-opt-p or whatever" a few time ahead of the chime, kind of warming up my keyboard, when I do hear the chime I do a quick press, release, re-press and hold. I'm sure the double stroke at the chime is the real trick but like i said, a rhythm.

ok ill try the trick

NO PROBLEM MATE! Sit back and relax!!!

I know there are several references to the NVidea drivers, but there are some 500 posts, and amongst these several references to several versions of drivers. I just wanted to check if there were newer drivers...

No problem bob!;)

This is the place to be! http://www.geforce.com/drivers select the buttons for your needs:

Done!

Goodluck mate!

All is working now - THANKS TO ALL FOR HELP AND GUIDANCE!

I have the GTX680 and the Accelsior card installed in my MacPro3,1 and it is working, and fast...

Of course with the GTX graphics I have no boot screen, which could be an issue when I have f..... around with the HDDs, the SSDs, and have an Accelsior card installed. A card which does not work with the boot menu either.

However, suggestions here let me to the USB/recovery partition solution, which works excellently.

I truly believe I have extended lifeexpectancy by about 2 years now...

GeForce GTX 550 Ti - MacPro 1.1 - OX 10.7.5

First off, my great thanks to Asgoroth for such an informative, clear and well laid out post. I'm certain many others appreciate your effort as much as I do. Thanks.

My question. Has anyone had any success with a GeForce GTX 550 Ti (GF116 I believe) on a Mac Pro 1.1 running 10.7.5?

Currently I have the stock GeForce 7300 GT, and it's getting a little long in the tooth.

I have the option of a Geforce GTX 460 (GF104) in place of the GTX 550 Ti, should the 550 proves to be incompatible.

Thoughts?

R.

Thanks, I'm glad so many people are finding this thread useful.

I'm almost certain that GF116 card will just work, I'm pretty sure I remember having a discussion with someone who used such a card. I really need to go through all the threads and update the list of cards that people have gotten to work. The Fermi-generation cards have been quite stable for a long time now, the only real issue for MacPro1,1 users is the fact that the newer Kepler cards seem to require Mountain Lion.

Thanks a lot for this very informative post!

I'm toying with the idea of giving one more upgrade to my good old MP1.1 (upgraded to 2x4c @ 3 GHz & HD 3870).

Two questions:
- should I try installing the latest nvidia driver on Lion 10.7.5 or just use the stock drivers?
- is there a comparable FAQ for AMD cards? What would be a valid alternative to, say, a GTX 560Ti?

630 works in Mac Pro 1,1

I am able to confirm that the GeForce GT 630 works when installed in a Mac Pro 1,1. The MP already had 10.7.5 installed. I additionally installed the nVidia drivers for good measure. No problems whatsoever. The video card reports itself as a "NVIDIA Chip Model." For reference the card I bought is a:

EVGA GeForce GT 630 2GB DDR3

Admittedly this is a cheap, low-end card, but all I wanted was basic support for Diablo 3 (not that I get much time to play anyway) and didn't want to spend significant $$$ on a 7-year old computer (excellent as it is).

Thanks!

Interesting to know, as it can be quite hard to source new Fermi-based video cards these days. Still, the GT 630 is way down benchmark charts, making me wondering whether it really is an upgrade from my HD3870... I guess it at least supports CUDA/Open CL and the 2GB may be useful for GPU computing....

It's better than a 7300! :)

I have the EVGA GT620 2GB and I am also getting the 'nVidia Chip Model' otherwise it works fine in 10.7.5. Does your Mac still wake from system sleep? I've found that mine did at first but after 2-3 days it will no longer wake the monitors after deep sleep. I'm simply turning off the Mac now as a solution.

Don't know - I never use the sleep mode.

Evga gtx660 2gb sc

Just installed my EVGA GTX660 2GB SC.

Initially, it was causing the computer to 'Restart because of an Error'. But I pulled it out, installed the NVidia drivers, then reinstalled it and all is well.

Asgorath, thank you for this great thread. I've read all 22 pages!

I have a Mac Pro 3,1. Right now I have a EVGA GTS 450 in it. I think I've got it narrowed down to 2 cards:

ASUS GTX 660 Ti DirectCU OC:
Newegg
ASUS

MSI N660Ti PE 2GD5/OC:
Newegg
MSI

The ASUS says "up to 225W 2 additional 6 pin PCIe power required" As these are both OCed, it looks like they're both pushing 225W.

Any suggestions?
Would I be better off with a GTX 660 or a GTX 660 TI (non OC) instead of a GTX 660 Ti OC?

I'm pretty sure all GTX660 Ti's require 2 x 6pin cables (which the 3,1 Mac Pro has ports for, you just need the cables that go from big to small)

Thanks. I already have the cables in, because I had a XFX Radeon 5870 in there that I got for $80. But it had the "can't play Steam games, DVD Player crashes" problem. That card is in my PC now.

Yep, as long as the card has 2 6-pin connectors, you're fine. You only have to be careful if the card has one ore more 8-pin connectors, since those are rated at 150W each.

Is it safe to install the nVidia drivers but not actually have an aftermarket nVidia card installed? Will these drivers conflict with the existing OSX drivers?

My 660 Ti won't wake from sleep - but that's the least of my current problems (Sonnet RAID 0 SSD stripe won't boot).

Same thing here (Same card), I turned sleep off, and just shutdown instead. I know this is not a real solution but works for me, for now.

My card is the EVGA GTX 660Ti.

Also the buttons on the Cinema Display works only in default mode and cannot be changed.

Campboot&win8 pro seems to be working great, for example crysis 3@2560x1600 with everything on high works like a charm, haven't tried the max settings yet, maybe later.

The driver won't be run if there are no matching devices. So, yes, it's perfectly safe to leave the driver installed when there are no NVIDIA cards in the system.

Asgorath, just wanted to give a quick THANK YOU for putting this together.

I was trying to follow a bunch of other threads for quite some time. This has been most helpful. :)

And me. Thanks very much.

My EVGA GTX660 ti arrives tomorrow. The six pin cables arrived this morning and I've just installed the drivers into Mountain Lion so when the card gets here I'm good to go.

I can confirm that 10.8.3 fixes the monitor sleep issue (monitor backlight remaining on during sleep) I had been experiencing with my EVGA 660TI FTW Signature 2 and the latest NVIDIA drivers in 10.8.2.
