With Pro Apps?

Can anyone report whether the combination of 10.8.4, Cuda 5.0.61, and Nvidia 02f01 - still allow or break the GPU from being used in CS6 AE & PP?

And the same question regarding the newer CC versions of AE & PP?

I have an off the shelf GTX570 2.5GB in a MP5.1 still on 10.8.2 with its appropriate drivers that is a rock solid system. And because this is my livelihood (not a gamer), I'm looking to see if the latest versions are playing nicely together...

Thanks for any feedback!

It works for me with PP CS6. Need to finish current projects before I have time to explore PP CC.

Would suggest that you make a bootable clone of your system drive and give it a shot for CS6. If you notice anything that you don't like, it's quite easy to restore that clone and be back up and running in little to no time.

Have not used a 5xx series card with 10.8.4 recently, but the 6xx series cards do work with CS6, 10.8.4, and the latest CUDA update. Aside from my random issue with a non-flashed GTX680 (that has now been returned), things don't look to have changed or broken. You'll likely have to re-apply the text file updates to add the card into AE & PPro once again, but that's the case with every update.

I'm on 10.8.4 latest drivers/CUDA with a GTX 570 2.5GB and it doesn't work with AE CS6. I contacted Adobe about this and their half-assed response was to blame Nvidia's 'flaky' CUDA drivers. But lo and behold, it works perfectly with AE CC (and every other CUDA app I have), so clearly it's just laziness on Adobe's part. AE CS6 is now no longer current so they can't be bothered to make it work, especially with unsupported cards.

I would like to upgrade to a newer better CUDA card, but confused as to what would be better than a GTX 570 and still work well in this mid-2010 12-core Mac Pro.

Folks,

New to the forum and I have a quick question:

I am looking to buy a nvidia card for my mac pro 2008 running 10.8.4.

Could somebody pls confirm if gt 520 or gt 610 will work with this setup?

Will this work OOB?

Appreciate all your help.

Thanks!

Thank you Nigel, Beamer, & Steve! I too am currently with projects, but when I finish this month I will update (after the clone). And yes, if I'm going to update - I might as well see what the CC version is all about too...

I will report back in late July,
Lonnie

Hey guys,

I'm running a Mac Pro 2010 6 Core with a HD5870. I've several intense GPU programs running and would like to upgrade to a GTX 760 with 4GB RAM.
Until now, i was planning to build a new Win System, which i will definitely do in the near future, but how hard would it be to but the same card also in my Mac Pro? To be honest, i'm not familiar with this topic at all and i couldn't find a clear answer using google.
So to make it clear: is it possible to buy a EVGA GTX760 4 GB, put it in my Mac Mid 2010 and use it under 10.8.4? As far as i understood, the biggest problem is the power supply, what would i have to change/modify?

Thanks in advance:)

Yes, you will need a power supply. People have had luck with the FSP Booster X5 External GPU Power Supply for other cards:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=17-104-054&Tpk=N82E16817104054

You will not get boot screens unless you have the card flashed. If that's something you NEED, then may want to look elsewhere for a bit - don't think those have been successfully flashed yet, but not 100% positive.

There's only a few mentions of the 7xx series cards on this board so far, but take a look at these posts and keep an eye on them - I'm sure others will venture to see if it's possible as well:

Titan with the mac pro?

Just curious. I now have a 2012 Mac Pro with a PCI-e expansion chassis that allows me to have a GPU that takes more power than the MacPro alone allows. Given that I am running the latest 10.8.4 and also the latest CUDA/Nvidia drivers, will the Titan be supported?

I am contemplating replacing the GTX680 4GB with a Titan.

Hi interesting expansion, could you please share more details/foto?
Cheers.

I have the Titan installed in a 4,1 updated to 5,1 system and it runs fine. No boot screens obviously. And no ray tracing support in After Effects CS 6 (epic fail). DaVinci Resolve runs fine with the Titan. Premiere Pro CS 6 also recognizes the Titan and is able to leverage GPU acceleration with the Titan. You might have better overall luck with the GTX 690 if you'd like to have ray tracing support in After Effects.

Thanks for the feedback. No support in AE is indeed an epic fail. But I am mainly counting for Resolve support.
I am keen on the 690 as well, but I don't see many reports of it so I am worried if it will work. Technically it is 2x680 slapped together but what it is recognized as 1 only? Just concerns like that. But I am glad to know that titan works. Do you know if openCL is supported too?

690 works as two separate GPU's on OS X. Both of them can be used for rendering software (I don't know, does AE supports several GPU cores or not).

I've also used the 690 in my system as well, and DaVinci Resolve Lite works fine with it. Since I was only running the Lite version, I was unable to leverage both GPUs as well as work in resolutions higher than 1920x1080. Nonetheless, DaVinci Resolve Lite performed quite well given it was only making use of "half" of the 690's potential.

Yup, AE sees both GPUs on the 690.

so to clarify with the OP

in my mac pro 1.1, if I get it to the latest ver of mountain lion and chuck the 660ti in after it should work?

(sorry i know im going on but I haven't really got a straight answer yet)

MacPro1,1 won't run Mountain Lion by default, it only runs on MacPro3,1 and newer systems. There might be ways to hack the system so that it does work, but I'm not sure about the details.

yeah was gona use the osxhackers guide to chuck it on, worth a try anyway, as a friend has a 660 ti I can chuck in to test it once its ready.

Update to the above:

I got myself a Galaxy GT 520 1024 MB DDR3 (similar to the ASUS fanless card). I am on OS X 10.8.4 with the latest update.. It works beautifully.

My original card went bad.. so had to remove the hard drive and update to the latest version of OS and plugged in the card and started the machine..

So glad it worked!! Thanks a ton to this thread.. saved myself a lot of money.. !!

Mac Pro 1,1 Newbie

Great thread and very informative. I spent a good hour reading through it...

I recently acquired a Mac Pro 1,1. I understand the limitations with earlier operating systems, however, I have patched my MP to have firmware for 2,1 and used the MLPostFactor patch to install and run 10.8.4.

With this in mind, would anyone have suggestions as to what graphics card I should be able to run on this? Am I still limited by the hardware and power requirements of this machine?

I'm not concerned about super performance, but would like to find something that is fairly current or faster than the stock graphics cards.

I'm thinking a GTX 650...

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/direction.

MacDann

I'm on MacPro 5.1, OS 10.8.4 with CUDA 5.0.61, Driver 8.12.47.310.40.00.05f01, AE CS6 (11.02.11) and my EVGA GTX570 2.5GB card is working fine with After Effects. I know the CUDA driver is the latest because I updated it via the System Preference Panel. Not sure about the driver version though.

^^^^Yep, you are using the latest Cuda Driver and the latest Mac Nvidia driver that ships with the OS. Nvidia has their own web driver 313.01.02f01, that's available here:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/macosx-313.01.02f01-driver.html

It comes with a nifty utility that let's you switch back and forth between the Nvidia Web Driver and Apple's Nvidia OS driver.

BTW, I'm also using a GTX570, it's a Gigabyte 3 fan model with an EFI flash by MacVidCards. It's the 1.25GB version and it's also in a Mac Pro 5,1.
