Could someone post a step by step on how to do this? Including leaving out language translations and other things that are not necessarily needed for some people.

This would be very helpful for me! I'm expecting my iMac by Friday...but who knows.

Since startup has been reported to decrease in time taken to boot up the iMac by doing so, so yes a fresh install is what I will be doing when i get mine in just a few short months.

Why bother taking all the time to do that, when simply spending 10 seconds to go to System Preferences/Startup Disk and reselecting the startup disk again cuts the startup time by the same amount.

If you want to get rid of the languages, there is an app for that.

This is the correct procedure. The ONLY reason to do a clean install on a new computer is if you're repartitioning the hard drive or installing a new one.

Onyx, xSlimmer, just to name two.

Is what a fresh install of the OS on a new computer will do.

Precisely.

Unless the original install was corrupted or you want a specialized partition, I don't see the point. Apple doesn't burden their systems with garbage software or shells like PC companies used to do. Routinely swiping and reinstalling a perfectly good OS on a fresh machine strikes me as a waste of time.

But it's the latest thing, I guess...

Didn't know :)

+1 on that. I'm just used to doing this because of years on windows machines.

I'm also sure that Apple is perfect in everything it does and the OS image that it sends out on every single hard drive is always perfect......right? ;)

Doing a fresh install on a new computer is silly. If you want to cut boot time, just do what is mentioned above (re-select the startup disc).

One might also ask why someone would need to shave boot time. I get it on a PC but how often do you need to boot a mac
