From iPhone 4s to HTC... and BACK to iPhone with iOS7

Long time apple fan, I owned pretty much every single phone Apple has ever sold. I did not want to go to the iPhone 5, and I kept wanting to try something different. That ended up being an HTC One. Very enticing design, at least it was at first, but that excitement slowly went away.

Used the phone religiously for about a month... I liked the screen size, but after a while, you realize that you need that screen size because the operating system is simply not as smooth as apple's OS. To me, even basic tasks such as clicking on links, opening and moving through emails, it wasn't as smooth as it is on an iPhone. I liked the notifications options, and the fact that I was able to customize everything, but in my opinion, most those things were easier done on an iPhone. My two biggest issues though - battery life, and the bulkiness of the device which made it such a pain to turn it on and start using. This thing went through battery FAST, and while I don't stream videos, I would consider myself a power user. The size would not be an issue if there was a way to turn the device on without hitting the power button on the top, try that with one hand while device is in a case, fail all the time!

Over the weekend, one of my friends helped me get iOS 7 beta, on my old 4S, and now I am back and loving it. Notifications are now significantly better, and this is sooo smooth all around. I can go on and on about what makes it better, but I am sure most of you already know by now. In conclusion, grass is not really greener on the other side, we've had it so good with the iPhone, I think sometimes we forget how good it is! Not perfect, but definitely better than the HTVC one.

disagree on almost all counts- havent used ios 7 though.

agree on battery life- the iphone 5 was no miracle in that regard either though.

And before I forget, the BlinkFeed and the way the Gallery is set up, those two were pretty major annoyances too, especially since you cannot really completely get rid of them.

LorPGDL - would love to hear how you turn the device on without reaching for the power button. I tried 2 Apps based on the motion sensor, but really, they weren't that reliable, at least not in my experience.

Also disagree on everything except battery. Most of your issues are personal preferences but one standout iOS has over the competition is battery life because it does much less in the background than android.

Charge an iPhone all the way up and leave it alone for a few hours and it'll still be at 100%. Do the same with an android and it'll probably be at around 92%

Or maybe because we use both operating systems on a daily basis and know the ins & outs better than those who spend more if not all their time on just one?

I can understand the device being too big for you or the battery life which are reasons to switch back, but your complaints about the lack of smoothness are strange. I find no difference in that when it comes to doing basic things like email or web browsing. The only times when the HTC One shows some lag is with certain apps that are not optimized properly.

And before I forget, the BlinkFeed and the way the Gallery is set up, those two were pretty major annoyances too, especially since you cannot really completely get rid of them.

Custom ROMs. I'm running a modified Google Edition ROM right now and the OS is smooth and the battery life is better than my iPhone 4s, but it was better using the stock Sense ROM anyway.

LorPGDL - would love to hear how you turn the device on without reaching for the power button. I tried 2 Apps based on the motion sensor, but really, they weren't that reliable, at least not in my experience.

Custom ROMs and rooting will allow you to use functions like this. I tried a custom kernel that let me double tap the bottom 1" or so of the screen to wake the device. That was pretty cool. I'm currently using a mod that wakes my screen when I press the volume buttons.

As a android lover I believe the OP and it had to do with manufacturer overlay. I'm surprised google doesn't put a stop to the overlay there only solution seems to be Google editions in the play store.
Another good solution is nova launcher or custom ROM. I think the Moto X has the right idea with overlay.

Apple users, not on the HTC forum to antagonize users. Either way, if u love the HTC so much by mine please, and if u love it so much and is better than the iPhone, please feel free to pay extra!

android isn't as smooth as iOS? maybe that's a problem with the One because i have NEVER nticed anything like that, and i've never missed my iphone because the BIG screen size, powerful and speedy processors,etc. etc. are really great

in my opinion, iOS7 packs all those iOS things in just a new packaging, nothing really significant added, android is much better and it's gonna get even better with android 5.0, and i've no plan to go back to iphone anytime soon, but that's just my opinion, enjoy your iphone and iOS7

Android is already as fast and smooth as iOS.

To me these people defending iOS is still smoother do so because they just don't have any more arguments in favor of iOS. They can't argue it has more or better features so they keep saying it's smoother because they just don't have anything else to rebate Android with!

In 5 years they will still say iOS is smoother...

I will try to the Moto X as well, I think that might be a really good solution, plus the size might be better. I think I would have liked the Samsung more since it has the Home button, that was my other choice but the HTC's design and fit are superior in my opinion.

I honestly never paid much attention to the smoothness factor, but to me, it became apparent once I started using them, and I kept going back and forth to make sure I wasn't crazy. Wife has an iPhone 5, so I used that to compare as well.

I've used both the HTC One and an iPhone 5 side by side, and haven't noticed any difference in smoothness. Either one are obviously a step up from my old iPhone 4s.

Which apps were you comparing? Strangely enough, Chrome on Android is HORRIBLE. If you instead use the stock AOSP browser, it is night and day.

Well iOS 7 brings....um, new icons and some colors and the new iPhone will bring fingerprint recognition. And then there will be a cheaper iPhone that is plastic.

I like both the HTC One and iPhone 5. I mean it's up to everyone to make their own choice but the fact that you are using a case on the HTC One is probably what is making the device's size unbearable. I don't use a case on any of my devices but that's just me.

As for the battery life try lowering the brightness and the other typical tricks and you should have some success.
