I'd hold off on purchasing the Mira/Mantra until the developer can at least acknowledge/update their own site to state compatibility with 10.5 Leopard.

hmm thats odd. I had issues with Mira as i copied the files over manually. So i talked with the developer then uninstalled it then used the actual installer and it worked fine. Who knows though.

I ended up getting a Philips eHome 2005 receiver off Ebay for $20... good experience so far.
I pluged it in (it has a usb connector only, no seperate power), installed Remote Buddy, and everything worked immediately — no config needed. The Remote Buddy software is very customizable, but I was surprised that I didn't want to customize any controls. The Front Row/EyeTV/VLC/iTunes settings were pre-configured just how I want em.
Good receiver. Its size is a little smaller than an Apple mouse, and it picks up the Apple Remote signal no matter which way I point it, even standing ~20 feet away (as far as I can walk within the room). The eHome 2005 receiver + Remote Buddy is a very good alternative to the Mantra... it works with the Mira software too, if that's your preference. I don't recommend getting a Mantra unless you want to be stuck with just Mira software... if it is even being developed anymore. Their app/site haven't been updated in 6 months, not even to acknowledge 10.5 compatibility.

The Mantra TR1 receiver only works with Mira software, and I read somewhere that Mira is buggy under Leopard. The Mira site only says support for 10.4.x.
Is this for certain? The website makes it sound like it will work with the built-in driver and doesn't need their software. I really just want a usb ir dongle (I have several remotes already). However it you have to buy the dongle AND the software (Remote buddy or Mira) it gets expensive fast. I want IR because I want to be able to use my Harmony remote that works with the rest of my multimedia system.

For anyone who cares I just put this together:

The receiver is the infra red receiver out of a non-unibody MacBook Pro directly (and ever so safely) wired to an old iPod usb cable. Works straight away with my Apple remote :)

If you don't have an old MacBook Pro lying around, you could probably get one off a parts dealer...

I just put together something very similar after getting annoyed with my Manta TR1 and both the Remote Buddy and Mira (which both work with the Manta TR1 sensor).

I purchased an iMac 24" infra red sensor and an iMac 20" Thermal Sensor Cable (as it has the right type of plug to fit into the sensor). Then cut one end off the sensor cable and one end off an old usb cable and soldered the wires together. Works perfectly with the Apple remote with no additional software.

All I need to do now is buy a PCIe USB card with an internal port, so that I can easily stick it inside my Mac Pro. Not quite sure where yet though, maybe route it up into the optical bay area

The machined holes on the front of the mac pro look a very nice fit for the black rounded end of the IR receiver :)

Yeah it's pretty much an exact fit, well it's just snug enough to hold in place.
Though it would need to either be routed up into the optical bay area, which I've done before with sata cables. Or maybe between or beside hard drive bay 1 and the fan cowling so I could get it to the front.

Just taking a look and it might fit nicely between hard drive 1 and the front of the system. Should be easier to position, as you can just remove the drive to get at it.

Has anyone been able to use Front Row on a Mac Pro with the apple remote application for Iphone? We are constantly loosing the remote to our appleTV (thanks to my 4 kids), and the remote application has been a life saver.

No its only designed for iTunes and Apple TV.

Alfihar: Im thinking above the first superdrive would be a nice place for it - up high.

Which one? There are many temp sensor cables and different part numbers even for just the iMac 20".

There are various cables with plugs that should fit, the one I went for had a part number of 593-0192-A.
For completeness the sensor board was an 820-2151-A.

I wanted to go for the easy option of just soldering the wires together, though you could buy just the sensor and solder some wires directly to it if you wanted.

Hehe i still havent borrowed a soldering iron for mine - its still rocking out with blu-tack and sellotape :D

Thanks for the info Alfihar - so I can hook up one of these IR sensors and wire it to the USB port on my Mac Pro (which has no IR sensor) and use the Apple remote without having to use remote buddy or Mira or ANY other software??

Will this also work when I use PLEX or XBMC? (standard Apple remote is an option for control in the Plex / XBMC settings)

CHEERS!

Knight.

Yes, it will work perfectly. Exactly how it does on any macine with the IR sensor built in. :)
