My setup is this:

- Macbook with filevault 2 that i travel with sometimes

1st backup
Encrypted Time machine HD: constantly backing up and just sitting on my desk

2nd Backup
Unencrypted backup stored in a safe which i update every 2-4 weeks.

I definitely want the 2nd backup to be easily accessible software-wise since its stored in a fireproof safe. This is in case i lose both my encrypted macbook and encrypted time machine.

Just tried to encrypt a USB flash drive using Core Storage but it returned the following. Was thinking this would've been quite handy.

Error converting disk to CoreStorage: The given file system is not supported on Core Storage (-69756)

I had got that error also, but i found a way around it, i was encrypting my usb (32 gb) and i made a small 2 gb partition that i wanted to encrypt. To fix that i formatted the whole drive to FAT (so i could use that part on a pc) and then made my partitions, i left partition 1 normal, but i clicked partition 2 and hit options, then selected GUID. After the partition was complete, i selected partition 2 (untitled 2) from disk utility, and went to erase, and changed the format to MAC os journaled, after that i had no problem encrypting it. Hoped that helped.
