I was in Apple Birmingham, UK the other day comparing glossy to matte screens.
spent a good hour looking between the two and one of the reps came over and said him: "ahhh gloss or matte, tough choice", me: "yup, just trying to decide" wanting him to leave me alone to make my own desicion.
him: "I think you can get some software that changes it from matte to gloss afterwards anyway"
me: looks at him with blank stare waiting for him to acknowledge his joke....no change in facial expression....the man is serious :-\
me: "oh right thank you, its certainly something to consider" wtf?!?!

i mean, if i was a complete nonse who hadnt a clue about technology i could have bought the matte based on that crap he gave me.
Where do they get the staff from in these Apple shops

Did you point out his mistake or did you just brush him aside letting him go misinform others?

I love when clueless employees say stupid things (I'm not talking about just Apple stores here). I never let it stand- I always (very politely, mind you) let them know that they are incorrect. If they are snooty, I'll fire it back at them.

I worked in retail when I was young. First rule of sales- if you don't know what the f you are talking about, don't say something stupid. It's really that simple. Best way to make a sale? Say you aren't quite sure about something and say you will get someone that definitely knows. It makes you look good, the other employee look good, and the customer happy. Same goes for restaurants- if you're not sure exactly what's in something, don't lie about it- go find out. Everyone wins.

Not an Apple sales rep, but in an authorized service center.

"That replacement superdrive for your Mac Mini will be $453".

That's half the machine cost for a $80 part, I found it realllly funny.

I think the funniest phrase almost all applestore geniuses tell me is " It's within spec" when they're staring at warped display bezels, high pitch CPU whines, completely uneven illumination of the display, grain, flickering and burning hot temperatures. I seriously have to laugh each time....ho ho ho.

I dialed up the Apple Store to ask some configuration questions on a MacBook vs MacBook Pro. After I asked my initial question...
Him: "Oh, well, I'm sorry you dialed the wrong number. I don't know anything abouts Macs."
Me: Looking at phone...confused, trying to remember which option (number) I had selected
Him: Would you like to talk about...Dells? No, seriously, how can I help you today.

Good joke.

I was on the phone with a sales/support guy because of my sisters faulty power adapter. He said at first that I couldn't get it replaced free because it was out of warranty, so I brought up the fact that it was faulty and was hazardous hoping to get it free.... long story short, he took me through the whole process of getting a free adapter replacement and when he got to the billing address, he said, oh, sorry we can't actually do this.

It may not be funny, but it made me laugh in disbelief.... :(

Add this one:

Sales guy: "The repair cost for your iPod will be $359."
Customer: "Isn't that the price for a new iPod !? Like that one over there ?"
Sales guy: "Yeah, but the repairs on that one will be even more expensive. It is a new model."

to elaborate on my signature:
I called back in November 2006 about the new 2nd gen MBP (C2D).

Me "Hi, i'm wondering if you have the new matte Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro available"

Rep "Yes, we've received a few today"

Me "Do you have the high-end C2D 15"?"

Rep "let me check...(goes and checks)...yes, we have the regular edition or the ultimate edition"

Me (first thing that came to mind was Vista) "could you just tell me the specs?"

Rep "oh yea its the 2.16 and the 2.33 available."

I'm a pretty techncial minded person, I now have to force myself (unless I am walking in to buy) to avoid these stores...
1. Futureshop
2. Best Buy
3. Henry's (Canadian Camera Store)

I have heard so much incorrect advice handed out a these stores to me and other customers (while I was browsing) I really can't stand it. If I followed the advice of some sales people I would be returning half my purchase due to incomparability issues.

So Examples - (some to me, others to others)
1. Replacing Motherboard - That won't void the warranty on a dell.
2. Just install Mac OSX on a PC, its easy and you save a lot of money over a mac.
3. I'm doing photography work, which LCD is good for me
First Answer - Shows me a lot of TN panels
Second Answer - Glossy Screens
Third Answer - Just go buy a dell... (wonderful)
4. Yes, Cannon Lens fit on Nikon Bodies

Just to show its not all doom and gloom... when I was buying my first SLR
Q: How do I mount this? (implied - Lens to Camera)
A: Wearing a condom.
Priceless

i stopped talking to sales reps in the apple store because too often the information is wrong. (the 2.3GHz G5 was not watercooled, you can use fire wire HD's on a Powerbook and many more...).

i also do not try to correct them because it's apples job to train their employees not mine (unless it's very easy to correct them. but i'm not spending 20 min to explain them that photoshop elements runs slow on a intel mac because its running under rosetta when the guy doesn't even know that there is rosetta  ).

yeah, i think apple is dropping the ball by not training their employees and the emplyees are dropping the ball by not trying to learn about the stuff they are selling. after all you are supposed to be an expert in whatever job you do.

friend told rep he wanted to by 15" MBP $1999 matte display but the only had glossy in stock. specifically told rep he didnt want to buy any other model

rep: take your time deciding! we have both matte and glossy in stock so it's all up to you

friend: but you only have the glossy at the $2000 price

rep: that is correct, so just take your time, there's no rush. it's really a personal preference. we have both kinds in stock.

friend: O_O

Today at the apple store:

Me : So which version of Windows runs best on Bootcamp?
Genius: XP is good. Just bittorent yourself a copy of XP pro and you'll be good to go.

Me: Can you use skype with a bluetooth headset?
Genius: What's skype?

Me: How many megapixels on the isight?
Salesman: I'm not sure let me ask...
Salesman 2: Its 5 megapixels like your digital camera. you can get a program to make it 10 megapixels if you want.

Me: Do you have the 2.2 in stock?
Sales: Nope
Me: Can I talk to the manager?
Sales: Sure
Me: Sir, do you ahve 2.2z in stock?
Manager: A bunch of them
Me: gives salesman a REALLY dirty look

HaHa, I love all these stories. I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds the Apple Store employees completely retarded most of the time.

Me: So I am pretty interested in buying a Mac.
Sales: Once you go black you ever go back.
Me: Did you mean mac?
Sales: No!

Strangest conversation ever.

I would have paid money to see the expression on your face after he said No!

Hilarious!

Me & Dad: Looking at the new 17" HD Screen (i have an "old" 17")

Salesguy: Can I help you?

us: Just checking the size - man, it's SMALL (we both have vision issues)

Salesguy: Well, you know it's made to hook up to your TV like we have over there in the Studio. You don't sit and USE IT, just hook it up to a big TV.

Us: giving him funny looks, "no, WE use our laptops NOT hooked up to a TV. Or Monitor. It's not why we bought "laptops"".

It degraded from there..... i walked off after stating to him "This is like a bad CompUSA experience".

He finally told my Dad (who's in an electric scooter and was trapped by the guy), "I've got to just walk away from this conversation."

Ummmm, good idea.

He was the second guy we'd talked to - the first was like "here it is, check it out, yup, the text is small i think".
