The funny thing is, the x amount of "mac users" that have jumped on board so they can have a shiny socially adored fashion item will believe it... which unfortunately makes up a large majority of "switchers".

Apple = Microsoft + Gucci

I thought this part of the presentation was hilarious

Yes Apple, you've made a viable gaming platform. Remarkably, you've also made one with cheap games - good on you! However, they're pretty much all "pick up and play" type games, good for 5-10 minutes on a bus. Where's the "serious" games? (Final Fantasy type RPGs, full FPS shooters?)

Oh, and I thought the PSN worked on PSPs over WiFi, and that the DSi has its own store too?

They need to accept they've made a different platform, not "the best".

:confused::confused:

Every iteration of the PSP so far has offered music, videos and the internet, and most (maybe all) also allow you to attach camera accessories. The only thing it lacks in comparison to the iPod touch is the multi-touch screen and App Store (and, subjectively, storage - but at least the PSP lets the user expand it themselves and don't have to conform with only a set amount of space).

That's what I thought, I do wish iPod/iPhone's hard drives could be upgraded. :rolleyes:

Apple = No 'Phantom Hourglass', no 'Mario Kart', no 'The World Ends With You' ...

Yeah, Mario Kart is a must have game IMHO. :)

Back to the Apple presentation on PSP & DS being/having "no iPod!" What are they trying to say? :confused: I mean Apple now allow Sony &/or Nintendo to make/market their portable gaming devices as an "iPod?" :confused: Even if Apple does allow that kind of "licensing," I bet Sony &/or Nintendo are going to say that they're never gonna be doing it because doing so will be "a bag of hurt!" :D

Actually, that's a really good point. I was mostly irked by the "no iPod" statement because music capabilities have nothing to do with gaming, never mind that both the DS and PSP can serve as music players.

Of course there's no iPod, Apple. YOU didn't make it. :rolleyes: Honestly. This part of the presentation was absolutely pathetic and laughable!

I would say so. :cool:

Apple's marketing team is damn smart... they've completely hit the nail on the head with their "fashionable technology". I mean it's quite brilliant... they've made it a virtual "fashion faux pas" to be seen with any other MP3 player and they've set up a system of software around it that sucks people straight in. It's hilariously brilliant.

Apple is gradually establishing a media monopoly. They've already clinched the #1 spot for retailing music... and it will continue.

Fashion is a tool for them. It is how they've attracted so many switchers. They've painted Apple as the only fashionable way to compute and MS as a lame alternative... and they're going to continue to do this as they try to make a strangle hold on other markets... enter the iPod as a gaming console.

Anyhow, so yes... Apple = Microsoft + Gucci (or Alexander McQueen if you prefer) :D

:apple:

Games are expensive - when they're new. Used - well there is no used market in App Store games. Although they are cheaper so this is somewhat offset. Casuals will outspend the hardcore gamers though - see the Wii as an example. It is a smart decision for Apple to take on casual gaming first.

No iPod - doesn't mean there's no media playback. Can't beat Apple integration though. It's just what Apple does best.

No multi-touch - well they have physical buttons. Personal preference as to which one you like. Soft buttons are more adaptable, but less responsive (so far, I think good programming can fix this).

No App Store - I agree with this one, the future is in downloadables. Save money and the environment not making physical objects, transporting said objects, running physical stores, or making consumers drive (at least here) to stores. Apply the same to the rest of the information economy and that's a lot of dead trees/animals saved.

"Casuals will outspend the hardcore gamers though". While the Wii may have sold millions more consoles than either the 360 or the PS3, the attach rate for games (a.k.a. the number of games each console owner buys) is much, much smaller on the Wii than the other two consoles. Surveys have also shown that people generally use the more powerful consoles much more than the Wii, probably because the Wii owners can't use their system to play DVDs, BluRays, listen to music, or use it for any purpose other than gaming.

I agree, downloadables are the future. Unfortunately for your argument, Sony and Nintendo know this as well. The PSP go does not use UMDs or any other physical media and relies on downloads from the Playstation Network, and the DSi was built with downloadable games in mind as well (although, as with most things, Nintendo is a bit behind with their use of this technology).

The games for the iPhone/iPod Touch are just regular cell phone games with a new control interface. Very little substance, and most aren't even worth the couple of dollars that you might pay for them.

The iPhone is certainly better than the Nintendo DS in my opinion, some of the games the iPhone does are more than comparable to the DS in terms of visuals ... see NFS and Tiger Woods for prime examples.

As for the new PSP Go, it's a rip off. The hardware is now ancient, yet this new PSP Go is no more powerful inside than the current PSP and lacks a UMD drive meaning the only value for retailers is in the hardware, not software and the thriving second hand market, meaning retailers will continue to push the cheaper original PSP.

If the PSP Go was a next gen PSP, it would be worth the £225 they're asking for, but for an extra £25 I can buy the new "PS3" or go to Asda and spend £25 LESS and get the original PlayStation3.

When I imported a PSP and Ridge Racers at Jap launch for £525 it was worth it ... but today, the PSP Go is not worth little under half that.

Who the hell cares about graphics? Two of the biggest issues with the iPhone/touch gaming platforms are control input and differential hardware.
Touch screen is horrid input device if thats all you're using, and it is easier with a stylus than a finger because you can actually see what you're hitting with it. The iPhone/touch NEEDS better control input (ie, buttons) to be a viable gaming platform.

And the other issue, each year they release a new model with faster hardware, enabling better games... but then all of the previous models cant play those games well or at all. I feel I need the new iPhone just to play some games that like to stutter.

As others have said, the iPhone/touch have great pick up and play 5 minute games, but there is no game I can see that I would want to play for x hours with a touch screen. (not to mention killing the battery)
