Actually, it is a valid argument. Apple isn’t going to release macOS on a touchscreen device then tell people just plug a mouse and keyboard in it. If the touchscreen doesn’t work properly, they’re not going to implement it.

I’m not saying there aren’t people here that would still make use of and even want a halfway functioning touchscreen, but this is not something Apple is going to release.
That's actually exactly what Apple did with Sidecar, MacOS on iPad without touchscreen but pencil support (actually some touch gesture are allowed, including a limited form of scrolling)

There would be a stupidly easy way to solve this.

Undocked iPad = full screen or split screen apps, plus Launchpad.
Docked iPad = full windowing system, plus Finder desktop.

It would actually be much more clever than the Stage Manager nonsense they devised instead.

To those that are saying "macOS is not touch friendly", my brothers in christ, I promise its significantly more touch friendly than windows. I used a dell xps for a while and when I moved back to my MacBook Pro I was reaching to touch. I feel like id slightly increase productivity and greatly increase convenience in some rare scenarios (day to day usage no graphical artist or whatever).

Id be a happy a man if they just added a touch screen right now, no OS optimisations. Typing this on a 13 inch right now lying on my bed and id rather touch the "post reply" button than drag the mouse button.

No. There's a reason the Surface never worked. It's horrible as a tablet and mediocre as a laptop. Jack of all but master of none.

The iPad is the best tablet because it's designed for touch. Even with a keyboard/mouse, it's still better at touch (I often still keep using the touch and only use the keyboard as a stand). It's multitasking pre-Stage Manager was fantastic as a touch interface. It's actually improved with Stage Manager in later Betas. I can use it without the keyboard.

Trying to merge them kills what makes both so good at what they do.

If Apple were to produce an iPad with a version of iPad OS that acted like Samsung's Android/DeX, many (not all) of the complaints about not having a Macbook/iPad mashup would go away. I just would like to use iPad OS in a file-centric manner, not app-centric. Without a universally accessible filesystem that isn't going to happn.

Sure, the lack of sales must be why they just released the 9th Surface Pro. /s

General purpose computers are best when they are are good at all tasks instead of being really good at one task. Besides, tablet computers rock when it comes to visual arts like illustration and photo editing.

I had the opportunity to use a surface pro for my job….used it for all of 3 days, before going out and getting the 3rd generation 11 inch iPad Pro with the m1 chip and magic keyboard and gave my company back the pile of microsoft trash and said umm, I’ll kindly use my own device, iPad Pro m1, with the Magic keyboard

Would be a dream to have an iPad runnings MacOS like interface but will never happen. Apple would never want to cannibalize the sales of their devices. You just have to get 2 T_T. I'm in the same scenario as you back then I love the touch interface of the iPad however its so clunky to use when using RDP into a windows server and tabbing back to other apps

literally don't need it. Id only like to press some stuff occasionally.
How many people would like the GUI if they could only use the mouse for some stuff? iPadOS has full trackpad support, but imagine if you could only use the trackpad occasionally.

Thats the problem. Apple has to make everything in MacOS touch-friendly, including moving all desktop icons and files up when the on-screen keyboard appears, or it's an OS failure. Personally, I have no interest in MacOS on the iPad if it requires a keyboard and mouse be connected; I want to be able to use it in any situation.
