Some time in the future....
Why do people need to know about something no one knows anything about....?
I am just curious to know that.
Oh sorry, I just want to know because I don't want to order an iMac now and then have it be outdated in two months or something like that. I hate that feeling. I love that Apple is on top of everything and all(except for the mini). But it's frightening for a first time buyer. You never know what big and better thing is waiting around the corner...for the same price of the current model mind you.

Just buy what you need when you need it, don't worry about what might come... you'll never buy anything with that attitude...
iMacs were just bumped on April 28 2008. The average time between updates is 211 days. It has only been 82 since the update. If you bought it today you would have around 129 days of bliss before you got the itch to buy another one
If you need it now get it now. No matter when you get one, something better will be about 6 to 8 months away.

its a marvelous machine for most peoples needs and is incredibly space saving.
I'd say a majority of mac buyers purchase a mac much too large (capability wise) for their use.

and the specs of your imac are?
I think I'm going to get my top-end Imac mid August, this is hopefully when they have the free ipod tocuch offer too. I have heard ( I know its not facts ), that they may be getting updated in Sep/Oct. Do you think i should wait until then, it will be my first iMac and i don't wana get upset knowing that i spent well over £1K then its ecomes ' outdated' a few weeks later.

hmmm the next refresh must include the quad processor prob as an option for the best imac cause there is nothing really for them to update to processor wise

Bigger is always better. If it looks too big, move your chair back and use the wireless keyboard. Integrated graphics alone is a reason to veer away from the mini. Besides, you want to tell chicks you got a mini?
3.06GHz, 4GB ram and 500GB HDD. It's just too darn big. I feel like I am sitting in a personal iMax theatre when I surf the web

I don't expect any changes to the iMac for some time. The "Santa Rosa Special" update they just did offers the same FSB and memory speeds moving to the Montevina platform would. Since the iMac uses a discrete GPU, there is no need to move to Montevina for the x4500 IGPU. And while some of the new Montevina-compatible Penryns have larger L2 caches, that's not going to set the world on fire and who knows, they just might work in the "Santa Rosa Special". If not, the iMac already matches their clockspeeds.
I would expect the QX9300 mobile quad-core would work in the "Santa Rosa Specials" if the dual-cores do, but if not, then I would expect Apple to not offer it because between the price of the CPU ($1038) and the cost of a special motherboard for it, we could see a quad-core iMac costing upwards of $750 to $1000 more then the 3.06 model and at that point, by a Mac Pro.
All of this is predicated on why the "Santa Rosa Specials" came into being. Was it because Apple is sitting on six month's production worth of Santa Rosa iMac motherboards that they didn't want to unload to clear the way for Montevina? Or was Apple almost out of Santa Rosa MBs, but didn't want to have zero product as they waited for Montevina and so were able to convince Intel to give them a Santa Rosa board that had similar performance to a Montevina MB so when Apple did switch over in late August/early September, end-users wouldn't know the difference?
For that reason I expect a H1 2009 update. Apple would then be able to have 3.33 GHz dual-cores in the top-end iMac.
Wishful thinking here, but maybe Intel could make a "Montevina special" update with 1333 MHz FSB for Apple that would last until Q4 2009 or Q1 2010.
I think all those theories are probable. Another one could be that Apple wanted to send all the Montevina chipsets to the Montevina MacBooks and MacBook Pros so Apple could release them quickly and not have to worry about supply.
The iMac was redesigned last year, and I don't think there will be another one until 2010 at least.
Internally, Nehalem is a big redesign of the processor microarchitecture, but that won't land until Q3 2009. There will most likely be one more update before Nehalem.
Apple's usual process of updating it's products is to keep the price points and upgrade the specs. For example, in the next update we could see the 2.66 Ghz option moving down to the $1200 slot, instead of the $1500 slot. They were just updated, and for a computer running so fast with the amazing OS X on it, I recommend buying now.
Something new is always planned or in the pipeline. My BMB is awesome, but I want to replace my AMD Athlon 3700 Tower. Processor/MOBO are kickin, but the PS/Video card, need updating, getting random shutdowns, etc, and to complete the move to Mac, (and as the PC dies) I'm waiting for the Quad Core i-Mac. Dress it with 4 GB Ram,(8 if available
)and the Largest HDD I s/b good to govery
